Doesn’t matter if you’re talking about music, video, print media or textbooks, their old guard will never give up the ghost voluntarily and they’ll sue to keep the control they’ve had for decades.

The real question is what books are going to be available for it? Will you be able to get ebooks off of Amazon. I don’t really know much about these contraptions:) But the Kindle always looked like a chalkboard slate. The ASUS looks like something I would WANT to read books on.

They shouldn’t have to pay for the professions “publish or die” or worse, their new car! All publishers need to accept digital as a format and get over their 15th century thinking. Paper books aren’t going to disappear anytime soon, but digital is the way of the next generation. Like it or not.

I just wish I had that option when I was in school. Too bad textbook publishers are still reluctant to go digital, but I have little pity for an industry that makes money on new editions.

Single-application devices, especially ridiculously expensive ones, are not going to survive. You need to bring the prices down and provide more power and applications and maybe it might be worth having.

Probably the nicest thing about the new device is it’s DRM-free, plus the lack of dial-in capability means companies like Amazon can’t retroactively decide you shouldn’t have something you paid for.
