Kaguro attempts to exploit Gen’s loneliness and fear of being rejected as a monster by his schoolmates and colleagues by giving him a sentient egg that Kaguro promises will be his friend no matter what, and will eventually hatch into a sort of clone of Gen. In reality, the egg functions more like a shoulder devil or ill-intentioned Jiminy Cricket, working to isolate Gen further by constantly warning him that Yoshimori and Tokine, like some of Gen’s own relatives, will inevitably react with fear and revulsion if they ever learn the source of Gen’s powers or see him even partially transformed into his wolfman-like ayakashi form.
