It’s Viz’s week for their Shonen Jump and Shojo Beat releases. There are a couple of new titles in the mix, including Oresama Teacher<\/em>, which is by the same creator as the infamously bad Magic Touch<\/em>. There’s also a new Pokemon series starting, featuring Platinum with help from Diamond and Pearl. DMP has a new novel for fujoshi, and Vertical has a certain cute kitten prowling around with a volume.<\/p>\n

The Picks:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Katherine’s pick:<\/strong> A fairly thin list this week, except for Viz. I’m going to stick my neck out and opt for Cold Fever<\/strong>, which is the final volume in a trilogy (the other two being Cold Sleep<\/em> and Cold Light<\/em>). It’s a really dark series overall, and in Cold Fever<\/em> the story gets even darker — and considering Cold Light<\/em> involved incest, child molestation, and familial violence, that’s pretty damned dark. But there’s light at the end of the tunnel, and the characters’ messed-up minds are depicted in a very realistic way. Not for the fainthearted, but utterly compelling if you can stomach it.<\/p>\n

Connie’s Pick:<\/strong> There’s only a few titles that jump out for me, but my most highly anticipated would have to be Butterflies, Flowers vol. 6<\/strong>.\u00a0 It’s romantic, it makes me laugh, and it’s josei, which is a winning combination for me.\u00a0 Hoshin Engi<\/strong> is also worth mentioning since it’s near the end and working its way through a fairly trippy finale.\u00a0 Can’t wait for the last volume of that.<\/p>\n

Justin’s Pick:<\/strong> There’s lots here I’m struggling to continue to want to read, if that makes any sense. Ultimo <\/strong>is the perfect example. Stan Lee’s frenzied, cardboard, 4-color mind combined with a brilliant iconoclast of a cartoonist like Hiroyuki Takei is a proven formula, but I’m still seeing it skirt the edges of either guilty pleasure or the breakout giant work that either man has created in the past. Considering the week, I’ll probably give volume 4 of Ultimo<\/strong> a go, and give the series the chance I haven’t given to Library Wars<\/em>, Bakurano Ours<\/em>, or Chi’s Sweet Home<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Amy’s Pick<\/strong>: Excited to see Cold Fever<\/strong> being released this week since I love dark boy’s love more than the sugary sweet titles but my pick for this week is the latest volume of Chi’s Sweet Home<\/strong>. I just love cuddling up with a cup of tea and diving into the cute world of Chi.<\/p>\n

Alex’s Pick: <\/strong>There are a lot of fine picks this week, especially when you get past the obligatory Chi’s Sweet Home vol. 5<\/strong>. Viz has quite a few nice series being expanded this week, including the fun and sexy\u00a0Butterflies, Flowers<\/strong>, and the nihilistic, grim Bokurano: Ours<\/strong>. A new series has me interested; Oresama Teacher<\/strong>, but it is by the same writer as Magic Touch<\/strong>, so I am infinitely skeptical it can be any good.<\/p>\n

Lori’s Pick:<\/strong> I’m liking the shoujo that’s out this week; Kamisama Kiss<\/em>, La Corda d’Oro<\/em>, and Library Wars<\/em>. But the title that will always get me excited with a new volume is Chi’s Sweet Home<\/strong>. This volume is especially exciting, as it goes off in a different direction than the anime.
