It\u2019s going to be one freaky family reunion!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/manga.jadedragononline.com\/village\/files\/2009\/08\/Chibi-Vampire-5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-4153\" alt=\"Chibi Vampire 5\" src=\"http:\/\/manga.jadedragononline.com\/village\/files\/2009\/08\/Chibi-Vampire-5.jpg\" width=\"108\" height=\"160\" \/><\/a>By Yuna Kagesaki<br \/>\n<strong>Publisher:<\/strong> Tokyopop<br \/>\n<strong>Rating:<\/strong> Older Teen<br \/>\n<strong>Genre:<\/strong> Comedy\/Horror<br \/>\n<strong>Price:<\/strong> $9.99<\/p>\n<p>After 4 volumes of almost all comedy, <em>Chibi Vampire<\/em> is starting to get some real drama going.\u00a0 The awakening of Elda Marker works as an introduction into the more vampiric side of this series.\u00a0 Up until now, it has mainly been about Karin living the human world.\u00a0 With this volume, we start to see more of the issues vampires have to deal with.<\/p>\n<p>Elda\u2019s awakening of course brings lots of troubles for Karin.\u00a0 Elda has a taste for young blood, and hates humans in general.\u00a0 So no one wants to tell her about Karin\u2019s \u201ccondition\u201d.\u00a0 And worst of all for Karin, Elda looks almost exactly like her!\u00a0 This gives rise to plenty of mistaken identities as Elda crashes Karin\u2019s school\u2019s Cultural Festival.\u00a0 Elda\u2019s visit is short-lived though, as she tries to awaken James, her husband, but he has dried out.\u00a0 Something that can happen to vampires, we learn, when they lose their thirst for life.\u00a0 Elda decides to go back to sleep, not wanting to be awake without James.\u00a0 Some clues are dropped about James and that Elda knows more about Karin than she\u2019s let on, leaving Karin to ponder her Grandmother\u2019s parting words. Then Henry and Caldera head up north for the Assembly, a yearly meeting of the vampires in Japan, where we learn that, other than the Markers, no other vampire children have been born in the last 100 years.\u00a0 It\u2019s a serious issue for the other vampires who want to know how Henry and Caldera had three!\u00a0 Though Caldera wonders to herself what the other would think of a child like Karin.<\/p>\n<p>Though there are more serious moments than usual in this volume, it still keeps its great humor.\u00a0 The Cultural Festival with Karin\u2019s class doing a haunted house was very funny.\u00a0 Karin can\u2019t scare anyone, Usui\u2019s eyes scare everyone, and the doll Anju gives Karin to keep an eye on her, makes the house a success!\u00a0 And the family\u2019s reactions to Elda\u2019s awakening had some good laughs, especially Ren\u2019s.\u00a0 There is also a great bonus story that tells how Caldera and Henry met.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve really loved the comedy of this series so far, but the growing drama has really added a lot of dimension.\u00a0 It\u2019s not just a flat comedy relying on one shtick.\u00a0 The fleshing out of not just the characters, but also the world they live in, keeps this series fun and fresh.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Karin continues to come to terms with her feelings for Kenta, but her flirting will have to be put on hold for now.
