{"id":721,"date":"2009-04-08T00:01:50","date_gmt":"2009-04-08T07:01:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mangavillage.co.uk\/?p=721"},"modified":"2013-06-16T18:56:40","modified_gmt":"2013-06-17T01:56:40","slug":"skip-beat-volume-16","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/manga.jadedragononline.com\/village\/2009\/04\/08\/skip-beat-volume-16\/","title":{"rendered":"Skip Beat Volume 16"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Saving Kyoko from Reino&#8217;s attack has finally knocked some sense into Sho&#8217;s head, and he realizes how much he cares for her.\u00a0 But before he can declare his devotion, Ren shows up to ruin the moment.\u00a0 Both men realize that Kyoko has no idea of their true feelings for her and begin a secret battle for her affections!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mangavillage.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Skip-Beat-16.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1123 alignleft\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mangavillage.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Skip-Beat-16.jpg\" width=\"107\" height=\"160\" \/><\/a><strong>By:<\/strong> Yoshiki Yakamura<br \/>\n<strong>Publisher:<\/strong> Viz Media &#8211; Shojo Beat<br \/>\n<strong>Age Rating:<\/strong> Teen (13+)<br \/>\n<strong>Genre:<\/strong> Romance\/Drama<br \/>\n<strong>Price:<\/strong> $8.99<\/p>\n<p>This volume is dedicated to the romance side of <em>Skip Beat<\/em>.\u00a0 Picking up the aftermath of a stalker attack on Kyoko from last volume, both Sho, Kyoko&#8217;s rival, and Ren, Kyoko&#8217;s mentor, realize their feelings for her.\u00a0 Kyoko, so wrapped up in her mission to become more famous than Sho, doesn&#8217;t see beyond the surface.\u00a0 This of course leads to a lot of melodrama.\u00a0 Kyoko didn&#8217;t tell Ren that Sho protected her from the stalker, Ren gets upset, Ren and Kyoko thinks they are hated by the other, and when they start to recover, Sho shows up and makes a challenge\/declaration of love to Kyoko.<\/p>\n<p>But, all that drama isn&#8217;t so bad actually.\u00a0 It all plays as a natural progression as Ren has been working with Kyoko for a while, and Sho, who&#8217;s been away from her has started to realize her value and his feelings.\u00a0 There are also plenty of comedic moments to break it up, and fit my sense of humor just fine.\u00a0 Ren&#8217;s charming-but-obviously upset reaction to not knowing what happened with the stalker at first was rather humorous.\u00a0 And Kyoko&#8217;s good-to-evil-in-less-than-a-second transformation was great.\u00a0 She looked truly evil.<\/p>\n<p>The biggest problem I have with this volume is trying to tell all the characters apart.\u00a0 Telling Ren and Sho apart could only be based on hair color.\u00a0 And some characters I couldn&#8217;t tell gender.\u00a0 They are all tall and thin, with the girls having next to no chest.\u00a0 Half the time I thought Kyoko was a guy and after a few more panels did I realize who she was.\u00a0 Another problem was the lack of any kind of introduction at the beginning.\u00a0 When a series goes on for this long, it really needs a summary of the main characters and a &#8220;what&#8217;s happened so far&#8221;.\u00a0 I could still figure out the gist of things, but it would have been a lot easier with a summary.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, <em>Skip-Beat<\/em> was more enjoyable than I expected.\u00a0 From the initial premise, I didn&#8217;t expect to like it, but, even this far in, it has turned me around.\u00a0 The characters are fun and not unrealistic, and the story isn&#8217;t a meteoric rise, giving it more credence with me.\u00a0 I would definitely give this series another try.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Saving Kyoko from Reino&#8217;s attack has finally knocked some sense into Sho&#8217;s head, and he realizes how much he cares for her.\u00a0 But before he can declare his devotion, Ren shows up to ruin the moment.\u00a0 Both men realize that Kyoko has no idea of their true feelings for her and begin a secret battle for her affections!
