It’s another exciting week in manga, and not always in a god way. Let’s start off with the good stuff though. Drawn and Quarterly finally releases Onward Towards Our Noble Deaths, a title they announced at SDCC last year. It’s a semi-autobiographical account of the last days of WWII by Shigeru Mizuki, the creator of Gegege Kintaro. In a more cheerful light, Viz Media releases it’s Shonen Sunday titles, as well as the annual appearance of Excel Saga, a title that’s been coming out since 2003. And on to the sad news. This may be one of the last times that Tokyopop will show up on the list, as they have announced they will be closing their publishing division at the end of May. Some titles will be fortunate enough to end instead of just being cut off by this, including Future Diary, NG Life and Shinobi Life. Get those Tokyopop titles while you still can!

Alex’s Pick: At least one of the guys is back this week, and my wallet is taking a hit this week. To make up for last week, I have three picks: Viz Media’s amazing Cross Game, which gets a third volume this week. Also on my buy list is V.B. Rose Vol. 12, which is absolutely lovely. Finally, I’m interested in Onward Towards Our Noble Deaths, but I have quite a bit of new material to read, so I might have to put that purchase off for a few weeks.
Justin’s Pick(s): Alex is right–hopefully you’ve saved up for this week, because there are lots to love coming. I cannot pass on Cross Game, and Case Closed has become a family favorite–my daughter loves the mysteries, with their episodic, classic feel, and she gets angry if a volume goes by and we don’t get it. A major work of gekiga like Onward Towards Our Noble Deaths is also a much see. D&Q’s books are well-crafted, and the care put into their design and production is always a tribute to the fantastic material inside. There’s even some series that I at least plan to take a look at–like the final volume of Yakitate Japan–which are impossible to fit into my budget this week. It looks like this is a 2-3 pick week!
Lori’s Picks: I really enjoyed the first three volumes of Hyde & Closer, so volume 4 is definitely on my must have list. Since the guys did multiple picks, I’ll pick one more. I was also enchanted by the first volume of Karakuri Odette from January’s MMF, so it’s good to see the series finished before Tokyopop closes it’s doors. Not a lot of series’ will get that.
