On their Twitter feed last week, Yen Press made two quick announcements that if you weren’t watching carefully, you might have missed. One was the announced license of a new series, and the print release of a previously announced digital only series.
Akame ga Kill! is a dark action series that Yen Press started releasing last year. They have now added Akame ga Kill! Zero, a prequel series. It takes place a few years before the beginning of the main series, and tells the origin of Akame, the titular character, who was bought, brainwashed and trained to be an assassin by the Empire. There are three volumes now available and it was announced in June in Square Enix’s Big Monthly Gangan magazine that the manga was “approaching its climax.” I haven’t been too enthused about reading this series, but a review of the anime in February 2015’s Otaku USA has made me reconsider. I’m gonna check out the series well before Yen Press releases this title’s first volume.
Servant x Service is a 4koma series that Yen Press announced at Sakura Con back in April as a digital only series. Yen Press has now announced that it will be getting a print release, which will be as a 2-in-1 omnibus. It is a comedy manga about civil servants and appears to be aimed at an older audience that would appreciate a stories that take place in the office and after work. I was interested in this series when it was announced as a digital only, and think its great that it’s gotten this upgrade. It is complete in 4 volumes, so only two print omnibuses will be released. The first will be out in April 2016.
