Every week, the New York Times and Amazon posts the top ten bestselling books. The New York Times gets their numbers from print sales from retailers, while Amazon and Vizmanga.com calculates their own numbers. Once a month the Nielsen Bookscan posts their top twenty graphic novels of which manga is included. Offered here is a listing of these books with their status this week compared with the previous week, and some way-off analysis of the activity.

  9. Attack on Titan Vol 1     ↓ 1
  10. Naruto Vol 69     ↵ 8

The top two titles remain unchanged this week, proving that Legend of Zelda A Link to the Past still has plenty of leg to stand on. Big Hero 6 Vol 1 makes a move back up as it proves it has some staying power after 8 weeks on the list now. Assassination Classroom Vol 1 is making a good showing as well as it hits 11 weeks. Only two new titles debuted; Nisekoi Vol 9 and Dragonar Academy Vol 6. It weird to see Naruto struggling as Vol 69 has only had 8 weeks total since its release back in March.

Much like the NYT list, the top two titles remain the same with Legend of Zelda A Link to the Past on top. The bottom half of Amazon’s top five remains the same as well, with the only change being the preorder for the next Naruto Vol, 70, moving up to #3. Only two new titles debuted here as well; Trinity Seven Vol 1 and High School DxD Vol 5. Male-gaze readers seem to prefer Amazon for their manga. The Legend of Zelda Box Set returns, with little surprise, at such a good price. The Tokyo Ghoul Vol 1  preorder has moved up again too with its release date now only a week away. Or was it the digital only release of Vol 2 over at Vizmanga?

Yen Press has two titles debut this week in the top two spots. Akame ga Kill! Vol 2 takes over the top spot and is followed closely by Log Horizon Vol 1, the light novel. Last week’s #1, also from Yen Press, Big Hero 6 Vol 1 falls to #3, but it still leaves Yen Press with a lock on the top three. Seven Seas’ yuri title Citrus Vol 2 moves up the charts to the top five. Kodansha’s only titles are a pair of Titans, while Viz Media’s Assassination Classroom plays a three-of-a-kind as it has a resurgence as the first two volumes return to keep the newest release, vol 3 company.

Legend of Zelda is back to holding on the to top spot with its release so imminent. Two other Viz Media pre-orders sneak onto the list with Rosario + Vampire Season II Vol 14 and JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure Part 1 Phantom Blood Vol 2 charting in the top five. I’m kind of surprised by the longevity of Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon Vol 1. It makes me wonder if there’s something more to the title. What’s not surprising is the continued charting of Attack on Titan and return of Monster Musume.

One Piece Vol 74 tumbles down from the top spot, finally giving Big Hero Six Vol 1 the chance its been waiting for to take it. The Attack on Titan volumes huddle as Vol 1 rises back up to #2 while Vol 15 holds steady at #3. A lot of titles return this week as well. Black Butler Vol 1 is a perennial, now having hit the list for 45 weeks total. I think that’s the longest after Attack on Titan vol 1. Monster Musume Vol 6 makes a return as another Seven Seas title, Citrus Vol 2 debuts. The newest Naruto, Vol 69 hasn’t been doing as well as its predecessors, having fallen off last week. It returns this week along with Akame ga Kill Vol 1.

Vertical Comics’ Mobile Suit Gundam The Origin Vol 9 is set to be released this Tuesday and preorders have sent it up into the top ten. Yen Press’ Yen On light novel line continues to do well, as its got three different titles on list. Akame ga Kill Vol 2 continues to do better here as it inches up a spot. I still don’t get the resurgence of Berserk, but Volume 1 took the biggest tumble of 7 spots.

The mighty titans are unseated by a bunch of pirates! One Piece Vol 74 debuts in the top spot this week. Big Hero Six Vol 1 keeps itself at #2 for its third week. While Attack on Titan Vol 15 falls two, it is met by the wizards of Fairy Tail Volume 47 moving up the same amount. Soul Eater‘s final volume, 25, also falls two, but it still has hope of moving back up. The other titan titles Vol 1 and Before The Fall Vol 4 lose some of the sail Vol 15 gave them, but after 93 weeks on the list, I don’t see Vol 1 falling off any time soon or for very long.

Yen Press gets two new volumes up with the first light novel of Log Horizon and the second volume of Akame ga Kill!. Seven Seas introduces their newest cast of monster girls with 12 Beast Vol 1, and Viz Media’s Deadman Wonderland just squeaks by at #9. Berserk‘s odd resurgence continues with only Vol 1 hanging on, but Vols 2-3 still made the top 20.

Vizmanga makes a rare appearance with a top ten list this week. Assassination Classroom Vol 3 beats out One Piece Vol 74 in the digital realm. Toriko got three volumes on the list, but with three different bundles running, it’s not surprising, though I would have expected Vol 1 to be higher. Dengeki Daisy‘s final volume, 16,  charted respectably, coming in at #4, with fellow shojo titles My Love Story, Library Wars and Skip Beat! not so far behind.

It’s followed closely by the monster girls of Monster Musume. Another new Attack on Titan title seems to bring they all out of the woodwork. Attack on Titan Vol 15 keeps control of the top spot while Attack on Titan Before the Fall Vol 4 debuts, bringing Attack on Titan Vol 1 up, and No Regrets  Vol 1 back. Yen Press’ Big Hero Six adaptation is doing well by hanging on to #2, but it just can’t quite topple the Titans. The final Soul Eater, Vol 25 takes the third spot. On any other week it would probably have taken the top spot. Viz’s titan, Naruto takes the biggest tumble, with Vol 69 falling 5 spots, but All You Need Is Kill is sticking it out, and has racked up 5 weeks on the list.

Attack on Titan Vol 15 rules the roost here too, but an odd trend has appeared this week. For some reason the first three volumes of Berserk, a title Dark Horse first started publishing in 2003, has hit the top ten, with Vol 1 reaching #2. I wonder what happened to push it up so far. One Piece Vol 74 is unmoved as it gets to be the lone representative of Viz Media, while Monster Musume Vol 6 takes a step up one. Yen Press’ strongest titles on Amazon seems to be their light novels. Is It Wrong and SAO have been hanging on to the top ten more the most of their manga.

It’s an even 1, 2, 3, 4 for publishers getting titles on the NYT list this week. Seven Seas Entertainment makes it with just one, their big hit, Monster Musume. Kodansha Comics comes up next with two Attack On Titan volumes, including the newest, vol 15 at #1. Yen Press makes three debuts, including the last Soul Eater, Vol 25, and the debut of the adaptation of Big Hero Six vol 1 coming in at #2. Viz Media has four titles, including returnees All You Need Is Kill for its 4th cumulative week, and Assassination Classroom Vol 2 for its 5th. It’s been a while since Viz has dominated on a non-shonen/shojo week. Attack on Titan has slowed down with vol 1 being the only volume being able to keep a foot in, but 91 weeks now is nothing but impressive.

Attack on Titan gets three volumes on the list, with newest, vol 15 and oldest, vol 1 taking the top two spots. Vol 2 just edges out Big Hero Six vol 1, kicking it from the chart. The preorder of One Piece vol 74 also just squeaks by at #9 while the Legend of Zelda keeps going strong, as it’s down to one month before release. The appearance of preorders continues to be fascinating, especially when they last for such a long time. Legend of Zelda has been charting consecutively since its debut in February, and it still has another month! That’s a title people are determined to get!

It’s good to see Kamisama Kiss and Yu-Gi-Oh! 5Ds, both at three weeks on the list, continuing to hang on, both representing genres that don’t tend to; shojo and gaming. Seven Seas’ Monster Musume may have lost to their rival the Titans this week, but the girls still hang on to the top five. The publisher gets a boost as well with the return of No Game No Life Vol 1. Yen Press’ single representation is also a returnee, with Akame ga Kill! Vol 1 hanging on at #10. Viz Media continues to dominate the list though, as it holds 5 of the 10 spots. Perhaps Yen Press can take some back after their big release this week.

Viz, which so dominated the NYT list this week, could only keep two titles on Amazon’s list as well. All bow before the power of Kodansha’s Titans!

Yu-Gi-Oh! 5Ds  Vol 7 made a nice move up one as does Kamisama Kiss Vol 17 and Unofficial Hatsune Remix. The biggest mover was Nisekoi False Love Vol 8, jumping four spots to #4. And it’s interesting to see the return of Wolf Children Ami and Yuki, with it being such a thick, hardback edition. Even through Seven Seas took the top spot, the majority of the list, 6 spots, belongs to Viz Media and their shonen/shojo machine.

Weekly Top Ten Manga

Every week, the New York Times and Amazon posts the top ten bestselling books. The New York Times gets their numbers from print sales from retailers, while Amazon and Vizmanga.com calculates their own numbers. Once a month the Nielsen Bookscan posts their top twenty graphic novels of which manga is included. Offered here is a listing of these books with their status this week compared with the previous week, and some way-off analysis of the activity.

A new Naruto volume means a new top title on the NYT list this week. Vol 69 debuts at #1, followed closely behind by the monster girls of Monster Musume. Vol 6 would be #1 if it weren’t for Naruto. Last week’s top title, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventures Part 1 Phantom Blood Vol 1 hangs close, only making room for the two big debuts. Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D’s Vol 7 also makes a strong debut at #4. It’s amazing 5Ds is still going so strong. Kamisama Kiss Vol 17, the lone shojo on the list, debuts at #7. It’s nice see a shojo pop in now that all the strong sellers are gone.

Attack on Titan Vol 15 makes its move one week before its actual release as it jumps to the top spot, and pushing its rivals back one spot each. JoJo’s Bizarre Adventures Part 1: Phantom Blood Part 1 and Attack on Titan Vol 1 settle in to their respective spots, and coincidentally right nest to each other. I think they may be keeping an eye on each other. The print release of the new Viz Media title Tokyo Ghoul Vol 1 makes its debut with its pre-order appearing on the list, the joining Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past pre-order.

Viz’s print debut of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure Part 1 takes over the top spot this week. Also debuting at #2 is Yen Press’ High School DxD vol 4, a title that fits with Seven Seas Entertainment’s Dragonar Academy Vol 5 which returns to clock in a second week. Yen Press sneaks in a second new title with Judge Vol 6 just making the top five. There isn’t much movement otherwise, with most titles only moving a couple of spots. Deadman Wonderland Vol 7 takes the deepest plunge, dropping 5 places, while Assassination Classroom Vol 2 settles in to the tenth spot.

Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past is finally pushed out of the top spot and down one by Seven Seas’ Monster girls of Monster Musume Vol 6. Attack on Titan Vol 15 is getting comfortable in the #4 spot. I wonder how long that will last though with its debut coming up in a few weeks. JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure Part 1 Phantom Blood Vol 1 hangs on to the top five, but the pre-order for volume 2 dropped off pretty quickly. There are only two debuts this week, both from Viz; Kamisama Kiss Vol 17 and Claymore Vol 26.

Vizmanga’s top ten is all over the place. Deadman Wonderland is enjoying a major surge with five volumes charting including the newest, Vol 7, taking the top spot. Bleach Vol 63 stays steady at #2, while fellow Weekly Shonen Jump titles Naruto‘s and One Piece‘s previous volumes return. Naruto‘s newest came out this week, so I would expect it to pop up next week.

Very little changed with the Bookscan numbers from February. Attack on Titan and Naruto remain on the list, though both take a tumble, with Naruto falling the most, 11 spots. A new title joins them though, Yen Press’ Akame ga Kill! Vol 1, which as made moves on both the NYT and Amazon top tens. Maybe it can make some movement for March. A new Naruto comes out this month as well, so the change next month may be the volume number. It remains to be seen if JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure Part 1 can take a spot.

There are some dramatic movers and shakers on the list this week. Two Yen Press titles, Akame ga Kill Vol 1 and Black Butler Vol 19 make some big jumps to return to the top 5. Also of interest is the return of Black Butler Vol 1. This used to be the Volume 1 power mover until Attack on Titan came along. Viz gets some of their shonen titles on the list with a new Deadman Wonderland debut at #2, and an unusual Signature title appearance with Gansta debuting at #3. Death Note makes a return for some reason, and Assassination Classroom takes the longest fall, 8 spots, after only 3 weeks on the list.

Pre orders are making quite a dent in the list this week, half of the list to be exact. JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure Vol 1 is finally released and Vol 2 immediately makes the list, and it won’t be out until May! The new Monster Musume moves up the most, 7 spots, to come in behind Legend of Zelda which seems to have staked out the top spot for a while. Attack on Titan Vol 1 takes the biggest fall, 6 spots, but just holds on at #9. This list has the most static titles with three keeping the same spot, and surprising all in the top five.

The great price on the Boys Over Flowers Bundle pushes it up to the top spot this week. There’s only one debut with Deadman Wonderland Vol 7, while several volume 1 return. Many of these titles were featured in the Fresh Jump Bundle as well as Assassination Classroom Vol 1 returning with Vol 2. Food Wars also got an addition volume, though Vol 3 seems a little odd.

  10. Black Butler Vol 19     ↓ 1

The final Neon Genesis Evangelion, a series over a decade old, takes the list, debuting in the top spot, forcing Assassination Classroom Vol 2 down one to #2. Attack on Titan Vol 1 makes an aggressive move back up the list to reach the top five. Seven Seas Entertainment gets two titles to debut, one for male gaze, and one for female. Yen Press has kept three titles on list for a month now. Black Butler is a perennial favorite, but Sword Art Online is becoming a proven seller, and Akame ga Kill! is off to a good start with its first volume.

Amazon’s top five hasn’t changed all that much. Legend of Zelda is going to be a big seller for Viz with the pre-order hanging onto the top for the last few weeks now. More pre-orders join it with the new Naruto and Monster Musume charting. Returnees are making a good show as well with All You Need Is Kill and Sword Art Online: Aincrad Novel Vol 2 charting. Attack on Titan volumes are constantly returning, so I don’t see them as too much of a big deal. The only surprise is which ones will be joining Volume 1.

Vizmanga’s top title doesn’t change as Assassination Classroom Vol 2 holds on. The debut of the Happy Marriage?! vol 10, the last volume in the series, is a nice surprise. Viz Signature titles don’t makes the list as much as they should. The Boys Over Flowers Bundle was obviously too good of a deal for people to pass up, getting it just into the top five. All the volume 1 returnees are interesting, and kind of unexpected. Two volumes, All You Need Is Kill and Seraph of the End were part of the YALSA Good Graphic Novel Of Teens list, so maybe that had something to do with it.
