Weekly Top Ten – April 18, 2015

Weekly Top Ten Manga

Every week, the New York Times and Amazon posts the top ten bestselling books. The New York Times gets their numbers from print sales from retailers, while Amazon and Vizmanga.com calculates their own numbers. Once a month the Nielsen Bookscan posts their top twenty graphic novels of which manga is included. Offered here is a listing of these books with their status this week compared with the previous week, and some way-off analysis of the activity.

New York Times Bestseller List for the week ending April 11, 2015.

  8. Attack on Titan Before The Fall Vol 4     ↓ 4
  9. Attack on Titan Vol 1     ↓ 4
  10. Sword Art Online Fairy Dance Vol 3     ↓ 1

The mighty titans are unseated by a bunch of pirates! One Piece Vol 74 debuts in the top spot this week. Big Hero Six Vol 1 keeps itself at #2 for its third week. While Attack on Titan Vol 15 falls two, it is met by the wizards of Fairy Tail Volume 47 moving up the same amount. Soul Eater‘s final volume, 25, also falls two, but it still has hope of moving back up. The other titan titles Vol 1 and Before The Fall Vol 4 lose some of the sail Vol 15 gave them, but after 93 weeks on the list, I don’t see Vol 1 falling off any time soon or for very long.

  10. Sword Art Online Aincrad Novel Vol 2     ↵

Amazon.com’s list shows some static volumes, while there is a majority turn over. Both Attack on Titan volumes and Legend of Zelda A Link to the Past hold the ground. Yen Press gets two new volumes up with the first light novel of Log Horizon and the second volume of Akame ga Kill!. Seven Seas introduces their newest cast of monster girls with 12 Beast Vol 1, and Viz Media’s Deadman Wonderland just squeaks by at #9. Berserk‘s odd resurgence continues with only Vol 1 hanging on, but Vols 2-3 still made the top 20.

Viz Digital

Vizmanga for the week of April 6, 2015.

  1. Assassination Classroom 3Assassination Classroom Vol 3
  2. One Piece Vol 74
  3. World Trigger Vol 5

  6. My Love Story Vol 4
  7. Library Wars Vol 13
  8. Skip Beat! Vol 34
  9. Toriko Vol 1
  10. Toriko Vol 6

Vizmanga makes a rare appearance with a top ten list this week. Assassination Classroom Vol 3 beats out One Piece Vol 74 in the digital realm. Toriko got three volumes on the list, but with three different bundles running, it’s not surprising, though I would have expected Vol 1 to be higher. Dengeki Daisy‘s final volume, 16,  charted respectably, coming in at #4, with fellow shojo titles My Love Story, Library Wars and Skip Beat! not so far behind.

It’s a whole new list, almost, on the Nielson Bookscan for March. The total titles almost double with the latest Naruto takes its place at the top with the next closest title being the newest Attack on Titan coming in at #5. It’s followed closely by the monster girls of Monster Musume. Yu-Gi-Oh! 5Ds is the strongest Yu-Gi-Oh! titles since the original with volume 7 coming in at #14, and Attack on Titan vol 1 holds on at the bottom of the list after falling four from February.

  8. Naruto Vol 67     ↓ 3
  9. Naruto Vol 1     ↓ 5
  10. One-Punch Man Vol 5     ↓ 8

Another debut title takes the top spot this week. Neon Genesis Evangelion finally finishes its decade and a half run to end at volume 14. Food Wars gets pushed back on spot, while Select title Future Diary‘s volume 8 debuts at #3. Other Select titles Kyo Kara MAOH! and Trinity Blood debut as well. One-Punch Man takes the deepest dive, falling 8 spots to land at #10. The Naruto sale finally starts to lose steam as only two titles survive, the first and the latest. Sadly, it’s still a shonen world as Kyo Kara MAOH! stands as the only shojo.

New York Times Bestseller List for the week ending November 29, 2014

  1. Monster Musume 5Monster Musume Vol 5     ↔
  2. Fairy Tail Vol 44     ∗

  9. Attack on Titan: No Regrets Vol 2     ↓ 4
  10. Naruto Vol 67     ↵

The monster girls do it again as Monster Musume vol 5 holds on to the top spot for a second week. A whole lot of volume 2s populate the list this week; 5 in total, with 4 of them right in a row. Sword Art Online: Aincrad, Attack on Titan as well as No Regrets and Noragami are all huddled together at the bottom half of the list. Attack on Titan vol 14 continues to hover around the top sport, sitting at #3 for now, looking to climb back up. Naruto Vol 67 makes a return to be the only Viz title on the list. Seven Seas and Yen Press only get one spot as well, as Kodansha dominates the remaining 7.

Nieslen’s Bookscan Top 20 for November

Attack on Titan no regrets 22. Attack on Titan: No Regrets Vol 2     ∗
3. Naruto Vol 67     ↓ 2
9. Black Butler Vol 18     ∗
14. No Game, No Life Vol 1     ∗
18. Fairy Tail Vol 43     ∗
19. Attack on Titan Vol 1     ↓ 13

Bookscan’s number for November came out this week, and manga went up by one title to six total. Attack on Titan: No Regrets stand as the top manga, but just shy of taking the whole list. Naruto doesn’t change much, only dropping two spots, while Attack on Titan Vol 1 takes the highest tumble, 13 spots to come just short of dropping off. The bigger they are, right? Seven Seas has another solid title with No Game, No Life making the top 20, as well as hanging near the middle. Here too though, Kodansha dominates, while the other publishers have to suffice with one spot each.

Weekly Top Ten Manga – September 13, 2014

Weekly Top Ten MangaEvery week, Viz Media and the New York Times posts the top ten bestselling books. For Viz Media, it is the bestsellers on their site, Vizmanga.com. The New York Times gets their numbers of print sales from retailers. Offered here is a listing of these books with their status this week compared with the previous week, and some way-off analysis of the activity.

Vizmanga.com didn’t post at top ten this week, so no activity from them. However, I did discover I missed a month of the Nielson Book Scan Top 20 for July, so I will include it as well as August.

NYTBS

New York Times Bestseller List for the week ending September 6, 2014.

  1. Yu-Gi-Oh 5Ds 6Yu-Gi-Oh! 5Ds Vol. 6     ∗
  2. One Piece Vol. 72     ∗
  3. Attack on Titan Vol. 13      ↓ 2
  4. Nisekoi! False Love Vol. 5     ∗
  5. Pokemon Adventures Vol. 24     ∗
  6. Time Killers: Kazue Kato Short Story Collection     ∗
  7. Monster Musume Vol. 4     ↓ 4
  8. Skip Beat Vol. 33     ∗
  9. Attack on Titan Vol. 1     ↓ 4
  10. High School DxD Vol. 2     ↓ 6

Viz Media, which had been purged from the list last week returns with a vengeance, taking 6 of the 10 spots, including the top two titles. Only the Attack on Titan vol 13 is able to survive the onslaught and hang in the top 5. Seven Seas Entertainment’s Monster Musume survived as did Yen Press’ High School DxD, the only volumes from each publisher to remain. Kodansha’s only other title is of course Attack on Titan Vol. 1. I don’t think it’s possible to knock that thing off!

The Nielson Bookscan Top 20 is a monthly ranking of graphic novels sold in retail, in brick and mortar stores. Manga is included in this ranking. For the month of July, 2014, six manga made the list.

1. Naruto 66Naruto Vol. 66
3. Attack on Titan Vol. 1
4. Attack on Titan No Regrets Vol. 1
7. Attack on Titan Vol. 2
14. Attack on Titan Vol. 3
18. Attack on Titan Vol. 9

Naruto moves up six spots from June to take the top spot in July. Four of the Attack on Titan volumes from last month survive and are joined by newcomer Attack on Titan No Regrets. Even through comic trades and graphic novels ruled Bookscan in July, Kodansha’s titanic hit doesn’t let anyone forget it’s around.

For the month of August, 2014, manga gains three titles overall, and not a one of them was an Attack on Titan volume.

3. Naruto Vol. 66
5. Attack on Titan Vol. 1
7. Attack on Titan No Regrets Vol. 1
8. Attack on Titan Vol. 13
9. Maximum Ride Vol. 8
12. Attack on Titan Vol. 2
13. Rosario + Vampire Season II Vol. 13
17. Monster Musume Vol. 4
19. Bleach Vol. 61

Naruto only gets the top spot for one month, but it’s also joined by fellow Viz Media titles Bleach Vol. 61 and Rosario + Vampire Season II Vol 13, which spent some time on the NYT Bestseller list in August. Yen Press gets on title on the list with its perennial favorite Maximum Ride, and Seven Seas represents with the monster girls of Monster Musume. Attack on Titan gets a nice little run with No Regrets getting sandwiched between the first and most recent volume released. There’s a lot of Levi goodness in the bottom half of that sandwich!
