Weekly Top Ten Manga – September 13, 2014

September 14, 2014

Weekly Top Ten MangaEvery week, Viz Media and the New York Times posts the top ten bestselling books. For Viz Media, it is the bestsellers on their site, Vizmanga.com. The New York Times gets their numbers of print sales from retailers. Offered here is a listing of these books with their status this week compared with the previous week, and some way-off analysis of the activity.

Vizmanga.com didn’t post at top ten this week, so no activity from them. However, I did discover I missed a month of the Nielson Book Scan Top 20 for July, so I will include it as well as August.

New York Times Bestseller List for the week ending September 6, 2014.

  1. Yu-Gi-Oh 5Ds 6Yu-Gi-Oh! 5Ds Vol. 6     ∗
  2. One Piece Vol. 72     ∗
  3. Attack on Titan Vol. 13      ↓ 2
  4. Nisekoi! False Love Vol. 5     ∗
  5. Pokemon Adventures Vol. 24     ∗
  6. Time Killers: Kazue Kato Short Story Collection     ∗
  7. Monster Musume Vol. 4     ↓ 4
  8. Skip Beat Vol. 33     ∗
  9. Attack on Titan Vol. 1     ↓ 4
  10. High School DxD Vol. 2     ↓ 6

Viz Media, which had been purged from the list last week returns with a vengeance, taking 6 of the 10 spots, including the top two titles. Only the Attack on Titan vol 13 is able to survive the onslaught and hang in the top 5. Seven Seas Entertainment’s Monster Musume survived as did Yen Press’ High School DxD, the only volumes from each publisher to remain. Kodansha’s only other title is of course Attack on Titan Vol. 1. I don’t think it’s possible to knock that thing off!

The Nielson Bookscan Top 20 is a monthly ranking of graphic novels sold in retail, in brick and mortar stores. Manga is included in this ranking. For the month of July, 2014, six manga made the list.

1. Naruto 66Naruto Vol. 66
3. Attack on Titan Vol. 1
4. Attack on Titan No Regrets Vol. 1
7. Attack on Titan Vol. 2
14. Attack on Titan Vol. 3
18. Attack on Titan Vol. 9

Naruto moves up six spots from June to take the top spot in July. Four of the Attack on Titan volumes from last month survive and are joined by newcomer Attack on Titan No Regrets. Even through comic trades and graphic novels ruled Bookscan in July, Kodansha’s titanic hit doesn’t let anyone forget it’s around.

For the month of August, 2014, manga gains three titles overall, and not a one of them was an Attack on Titan volume.

3. Naruto Vol. 66
5. Attack on Titan Vol. 1
7. Attack on Titan No Regrets Vol. 1
8. Attack on Titan Vol. 13
9. Maximum Ride Vol. 8
12. Attack on Titan Vol. 2
13. Rosario + Vampire Season II Vol. 13
17. Monster Musume Vol. 4
19. Bleach Vol. 61

Naruto only gets the top spot for one month, but it’s also joined by fellow Viz Media titles Bleach Vol. 61 and Rosario + Vampire Season II Vol 13, which spent some time on the NYT Bestseller list in August. Yen Press gets on title on the list with its perennial favorite Maximum Ride, and Seven Seas represents with the monster girls of Monster Musume. Attack on Titan gets a nice little run with No Regrets getting sandwiched between the first and most recent volume released. There’s a lot of Levi goodness in the bottom half of that sandwich!
