Weekly Top Ten Manga

Every week, the New York Times and Amazon posts the top ten bestselling books. The New York Times gets their numbers from print sales from retailers, while Amazon and Vizmanga.com calculates their own numbers. Once a month the Nielsen Bookscan posts their top twenty graphic novels of which manga is included. Offered here is a listing of these books with their status this week compared with the previous week, and some way-off analysis of the activity.

Tokyo Ghoul loses its strangle hold on the top spot as Vertical Comics’ Mobile Suit Gundam The Origin, the final volume in this surprise hit series take over at #1. Yen Press gets two titles on the list with the second volume of the adaptation of Big Hero 6 and the third volume of adaptation of Sword Art Online Progressive. Seven Seas keeps their two big titles on the list for a third week, with The Ancient Magus’ Bride even holding on to the #3 spot for a second week.  Viz still holds half the list, but that’s a drop from previous weeks where it was taking 7-8 spots.

The final volume of Naruto, Vol 72, finally makes it to the top spot with only one more week to go before it’s release. Now that it is October, it isn’t surprising to see the scary and disturbing Uzumaki return to the list. It didn’t take the coming of Halloween to keep Tokyo Ghoul on the list, though the pre-order of vol 3 did break away from the other two to rise up 1 place. Only one title on Amazon’s list this week isn’t from Viz, and that’s Yen Press’ Sword Art Online Progressive, making its debut.
