Weekly Top Ten Manga

Every week, the New York Times and Amazon posts the top ten bestselling books. The New York Times gets their numbers from print sales from retailers, while Amazon calculates their own numbers. Once a month the Nielsen Bookscan posts their top twenty graphic novels of which manga is included. Offered here is a listing of these books with their status this week compared with the previous week, along with some way-off analysis of the activity.

New York Times Bestseller List for the week ending January 9, 2016

  2. Naruto: The Seventh Hokage and the Scarlet Spring
  3. One-Punch Man Vol 1     ↓ 1
  4. One-Punch Man Vol 3     ↓ 1
  5. Tokyo Ghoul Vol 4     ↔
  6. One-Punch Man Vol 2     ↓ 2

  8. Twin Star Exorcists Vol 3
  9. Tokyo Ghoul Vol 3     ↓ 3
  10. Tokyo Ghoul Vol 2     ↓ 3

New shonen releases shake up the list this week. At least it gets an injection of some new blood, but not at the top. One-Punch Man Vol 4 debuts at #1 with the last Naruto, The Seventh Hokage and the Scarlet Spring debuting right behind it at #2. Fairy Tail Vol 51, the lone non-Viz title debuts at #7, with Twin Star Exorcists Vol 3 coming in right behind at #8. The rest of the list is the usual One-Punch Man and Tokyo Ghoul volumes falling down to fill in the holes while Attack on Titan is exiled from the list completely.

  1. One Punch Man 01One-Punch Man Vol 1     ↔ 10
  2. One-Punch Man Vol 2     ↑ 1
  3. One-Punch Man Vol 4   ↓ 1
  4. One-Punch Man Vol 3     ↑ 2

  7. Tokyo Ghoul Vol 4
  8. Tokyo Ghoul Vol 3     ↔ 1
  9. Tokyo Ghoul Vol 2     ↔ 1
  10. Tokyo Ghoul Vol 5

There is less of a shakeup here, as only one volume is changed. One-Punch Man Vol 5 pre-order is switched out for the Tokyo Ghoul Vol 5 pre-order.  One-Punch Man does some switching around but Vol 1 keeps its hold on the top spot for the 11th week in a row. Naruto: The Seven Hokage and the Scarlet Spring stands as the great divide between them and Tokyo Ghoul. While Kodansha has been able to make some inroads to the NYT list, Viz holds fast and hard to Amazon.

Once again, manga gets 7 volumes on the Bookscan Top 20. One-Punch Man Vol 1 takes the highest rank at #3, but Tokyo Ghoul gets the most volumes as Vol 4 jumps in at #9, and the final Naruto is finally pushed off. With One-Punch Man Vol 4 out this month, it will be interesting to see if it pushes any of the other volumes off, or if room is made for it.
