Also debuting is Pokemon Adventures Vol 29, but it doesn’t do as well, only coming in at #9. Big Hero Six Vol 1 and Noragami Vol 5 stay the course, holding fast at their respective spot while Assassination Classroom gets a double dose with Vol 4 returning while Vol 1 moves back up the list. Viz dominates the list this week with 6 of the 10 spots, but Yen Press and Kodansha have their best sellers fighting back.

Nielsen’s Bookscan Top 20 for June 2015

Naruto 701. Naruto Vol 70
5. Tokyo Ghoul Vol 1
8. Legend of Zelda A Link to the Past     ↓ 4
12. Attack on Titan Vol 1

Manga doubled its presence on the Bookscan for June. One title, Legend of Zelda A Link to the Past, was able to hold over dropping to #8. It also took the top spot with Naruto Vol 70 debuting at #1, and Tokyo Ghoul making the top five by debuting at #5. Attack on Titan vol 1 made a return, just missing the top ten by 2 spots. It’s good to see manga’s presence increase, something that will hopefully happen more as Barnes and Noble increases their manga shelf space.

  10. Legend of Zelda A Link to the Past

Quite a few titles held on to their spots this week, an unusual event for the NYT list. Naruto Vol 70 keeps its hold on the top spot, while Fairy Tail Vol 48 and Attack on Titan Vol 1 dig into their spots at #3 and #8 respectively. Legend of Zelda A Link to the Past also clings to the list at #10 for second week. The two newcomers to the list come from Viz, Deadman Wonderland Vol 9 and Kamisama Kiss Vol 18. Kamisama Kiss may be seeing a bump due to the mangaka’s scheduled appearance at Anime Expo in two weeks. Wouldn’t it be a great gift to her if this volume held on until then?

Just like the NYT list, several titles hold on to their spots at Amazon as well. The top three titles with Tokyo Ghoul Vol 1, Legend of Zelda A Link to the Past, and Naruto Vol 70 all hold on. The Legend of Zelda Box Set also hold its place at #6. Attack on Titan saw a surge with Volumes 2 and 8 returning to the list. The new title to debut is Deadman Wonderland Vol 9, slipping in at #10.

Nielsen’s Bookscan Top 20 for May 2015

LegendOfZelda-LinkToThePast-3D2. Legend of Zelda A Link to the Past
9. Rosario + Vampire Season II Vol 14

May was not kind to manga of at the Nielsen Bookscan. Only two titles made the list, though it shouldn’t be any big surprise that the highest ranking title is Legend of Zelda A Link to the Past. The only other title to make it was also a Viz title and it at least broke the top ten with Rosario + Vampire Season II Vol 14 coming in at #9.

  9. Assassination Classroom Vol 1     ↓ 4
  10. Akame ga Kill! Vol 1     ↓

Forget about Titans, it’s the attack of the vol 1s! Half of the list this week is composed of vol 1s. Death Note, Assassination Classroom, and Akame ga Kill! join Attack on Titan and Big Hero Six in holding spots on the list. The top title goes not to a vol 1, but vol 9 as Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin gets closer to its end. Noragami Vol 4 is the only other debut manga to make the list this week. Naruto Vol 69 seems to has lost its sheen as it nears its finale. It doesn’t seem to have the same staying power it used to. Maybe losing the drama between Naruto and Sasuke has made fans lose interest as well.

  9. Sword Art Online Progressive Novel Vol 1     ↵
  10. Attack on Titan Vol 1     ↓ 7

With the release of the actual volume, Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past not only takes the top manga spot at Amazon, it also overtakes Legend of Zelda: Hyrule Historia, an art book that has held #1 for months. So Legend of Zelda takes over from Legend of Zelda. It’s kind of like howAttack on Titan used to be. Yen Press’ new light novel The Devil is a Part-Timer debuts respectably, charting in the top 5. Viz’s re-release of Uzumaki is getting more love, possibly in anticipation of the new Junji Ito manga, Fragments of Horror, set to come out in June.

Nielsen Book Scan Top 20 for the month of April 2015

Attack on Titan 156. Attack on Titan Vol 15
11. Big Hero Six Vol 1
12. Naruto Vol 69

Manga loses a couple of spots from last month as comic readers prepare for the big summer releases from Marvel mostly. Attack on Titan and Naruto are the titles you would expect to see, but Big Hero Six might slip under people’s radar. The movie did okay here, but fans love it a lot. Wondercon was filled with Big Hero Six cosplay, and being a Disney property gives it a lot of marketing behind it. I expect it hold out next month too.

Viz’s print debut of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure Part 1 takes over the top spot this week. Also debuting at #2 is Yen Press’ High School DxD vol 4, a title that fits with Seven Seas Entertainment’s Dragonar Academy Vol 5 which returns to clock in a second week. Yen Press sneaks in a second new title with Judge Vol 6 just making the top five. There isn’t much movement otherwise, with most titles only moving a couple of spots. Deadman Wonderland Vol 7 takes the deepest plunge, dropping 5 places, while Assassination Classroom Vol 2 settles in to the tenth spot.

Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past is finally pushed out of the top spot and down one by Seven Seas’ Monster girls of Monster Musume Vol 6. Attack on Titan Vol 15 is getting comfortable in the #4 spot. I wonder how long that will last though with its debut coming up in a few weeks. JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure Part 1 Phantom Blood Vol 1 hangs on to the top five, but the pre-order for volume 2 dropped off pretty quickly. There are only two debuts this week, both from Viz; Kamisama Kiss Vol 17 and Claymore Vol 26.

Vizmanga’s top ten is all over the place. Deadman Wonderland is enjoying a major surge with five volumes charting including the newest, Vol 7, taking the top spot. Bleach Vol 63 stays steady at #2, while fellow Weekly Shonen Jump titles Naruto‘s and One Piece‘s previous volumes return. Naruto‘s newest came out this week, so I would expect it to pop up next week.

AoT 113. Attack on Titan Vol 1     ↓ 5
16. Naruto Vol 68     ↓ 11
18. Akame ga Kill! Vol 1     ∗

Very little changed with the Bookscan numbers from February. Attack on Titan and Naruto remain on the list, though both take a tumble, with Naruto falling the most, 11 spots. A new title joins them though, Yen Press’ Akame ga Kill! Vol 1, which as made moves on both the NYT and Amazon top tens. Maybe it can make some movement for March. A new Naruto comes out this month as well, so the change next month may be the volume number. It remains to be seen if JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure Part 1 can take a spot.
