Weekly Top Ten – October 17, 2015

Weekly Top Ten Manga

Every week, the New York Times and Amazon posts the top ten bestselling books. The New York Times gets their numbers from print sales from retailers, while Amazon and Vizmanga.com calculates their own numbers. Once a month the Nielsen Bookscan posts their top twenty graphic novels of which manga is included. Offered here is a listing of these books with their status this week compared with the previous week, and some way-off analysis of the activity.

NYTBSNew York times Bestseller List for the week ending October 9, 2015

  1. Naruto 72Naruto Vol 72
  2. Food Wars Vol 8
  3. Tokyo Ghoul Vol 1     ↑ 1
  4. Kamisama Kiss Vol 19
  5. Yu-Gi-Oh 5Ds Vol 8
  6. Tokyo Ghoul Vol 2     ↓ 5
  7. Big Hero 6 Vol 2     ↓ 1
  8. One-Punch Man Vol 1     ↓ 6
  9. Assassination Classroom Vol 6
  10. Sword Art Online Progressive Vol 3     ↓ 3

Viz has a new release week and new titles dominate the list. The top title shouldn’t be any surprise. Naruto Vol 72, the final volume of the series reaches the top spot on the New York times finally. Debuting very strongly is Food Wars Vol 8. Perennial titles to hit the list with every release, Kamisama Kiss and Yu-Gi-Oh! 5Ds chart with their newest volumes 19 and 8 respectively. Assassination Classroom is  more a of slow burn, debuting low on the list, such as Vol 6 has done this week, but it will make its way up soon. Yen Press is the only other publisher to make it onto the list with Big Hero 6 Vol 2 and Sword Art Online Progressive Vol 3 falling slightly but still hanging on.

AmazonAmazon.com for the week ending October 17, 2015

  2. Tokyo Ghoul Vol 3     ↑ 1
  3. One-Punch Man Vol 1     ↓ 1
  4. One-Punch Man Vol 2
  5. Tokyo Ghoul Vol 1     ↑ 1
  6. Tokyo Ghoul Vol 2     ↑ 1
  7. Naruto Vol 71     ↓ 2
  8. Uzumaki 3-in-1 Deluxe Edition
  9. Sword Art Online Progressive Novel Vol 3
  10. Naruto: Kakashi’s Story

Naruto Vol 72 holds the top spot for a second week in row, keeping Tokyo Ghoul Vol 3 at bay. The first two Tokyo Ghoul volumes as well One-Punch Man Vol 1 and 2 have lined up like ducks, pushing the penultimate Naruto Vol 71 down. The only two new entries to the list are light novel pre-orders. Sword Art Online Progressive Novel Vol 3 is a given, but Naruto: Kakashi’s Story is a new series of light novels from Viz that feature different characters from the Naruto universe. I expect they be appearing more as their release date looms.

TokyoGhoul-GN015. Tokyo Ghoul Vol 1
7. Tokyo Ghoul Vol 2
8. One-Punch Man Vol 1
10. Naruto Vol 71
11. One-Punch Man Vol 2
13. Attack on Titan Vol 16
19. Attack on Titan Vol 1

Manga holds step in September with the same number of volumes as August, and it’s mostly the same franchises. Tokyo Ghoul, Attack on Titan and Naruto have been dominating top ten lists for months. The big newcomer this month is One-Punch Man, whose first two volumes debuted in print last month and really made an impression. I would not be surprised if next month the list increased by one and we saw doubles of Naruto as well as Vol 72 holding the top spot.
