Weekly Top Ten – September 5, 2015

Weekly Top Ten Manga

Every week, the New York Times and Amazon posts the top ten bestselling books. The New York Times gets their numbers from print sales from retailers, while Amazon and Vizmanga.com calculates their own numbers. Once a month the Nielsen Bookscan posts their top twenty graphic novels of which manga is included. Offered here is a listing of these books with their status this week compared with the previous week, and some way-off analysis of the activity.

So much for Attack on Titan Vol 1 being gone from the list for good. It returns with the newest volume 16 and bookends the list, taking the first and last spots. Tokyo Ghoul Vol 2 grudgingly made room for the new Titans volume, but seems to have called for help from Vol 1 which moved up a space this week. Citrus Vol 3 from Seven Seas Entertainment continues to hover around the middle, surrounded by shonen and titles, including Yen Press’ Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon Novel 3 which fell the most, six spots.

The One Punch Man Vol 1 print punches its way up to the top of this week’s list with Vol 2 not far behind as it makes the biggest move, up 5 spots, and forces Attack on Titan Vol 16 down to #4. There is only one shojo title on the list, Ancient Magus’ Bride Vol 2, which is surrounded by a bevy of shonen titles. Tokyo Ghoul digs its heels in with Vol 2 and 3 holding on to their respective spots from last week.

Nielsen Bookscan Top 20 for August 2015

2. Naruto 71Naruto Vol 71
4. Tokyo Ghoul Vol 1     ↓ 2
5. Tokyo Ghoul Vol 2
6. Monster Musume Vol 7
15. Naruto Vol 70     ↓ 11
19. Attack on Titan Vol 16
20. Attack on Titan Vol 1

Manga did really well in August, compared to the last several months. Three additional titles made it to the list to make it seven total. Naruto and Attack on Titan are big properties while Tokyo Ghoul is working to make a name for itself, perhaps to take over Naruto‘s spot when it ends.
