It’s the first Wednesday of the month, so that means Viz Media rains down with all their shonen and shojo releases. Smartly, other publishers keep their releases to a minimum. It’s hard to go against the Viz Shonen juggernaut.

Only Dark Horse and Kodansha have print titles coming out this week. Kodansha also has a few digital releases. The big anomaly is DC Comics as it releases the 3rd and final collected volume of their release of Batman: The Jiro Kuwata Batmanga. If you haven’t checkout out this hot mess of 1960s Japanese take on DC Dark Knight, then you are missing out! It’s a lot of fun and the first volume made it on the YALSA Great Graphic Novels for Teens 2016 list. Even if you don’t care for Batman or American Comics, this title is worth the read.

Moving on to the Elephant in the room, Viz Media has some new releases among their regular shonen releases of Assassination Classroom, Food Wars, One Piece and Toriko. School Judgment: Gakkyu Hotei is the newest, and short-lived series from artist Takeshi Obata and writer Nobuaki Enoki. The series ran in their digital Weekly Shonen Jump and was a Jump Start series. It’s basically a courtroom drama set in an elementary school, with Phoenix Wright if he was a kid, blonde and wore glasses. I was intrigued by the few chapters I read in the magazine, so I will be picking the first volume up. On the Shojo side, Bisco Hatori, the creator of Ouran High School Host Club and Millennium Snow has a new series. Behind the Scenes has a college-aged protagonist and features an eclectic cast of drama students. I’m at least interesting in checking it out. One shojo series also ends. QQ Sweeper from Kyousuke Motomi, the creator of Degenki Daisy and Beast Master, ends with this week’s release of the second volume.
