Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump has announced in its 11th issue this year that Yusei Matsui’s manga Assassination Classroom will end with the next chapter to be published in the 12th issue due out February 22nd. The series will be on the front cover of the magazine and feature opening color pages.
Assassination Classroom follows a class of misfits who have been given the mission of killing their teacher; a many tentacled alien who has threatened to destroy the Earth if they don’t succeed in one year. The students have a lot of motivations to do this, including a 10 billion yen reward, but Koro Sensei turns out to be a good teacher that actually cares about them and truly wants them to succeed, making it a harder choice for the students. Shueisha is teasing the final chapter as the “conclusion to the fated battle.”
There are 17 volumes of the manga out in Japan so far, with volumes 18 and 19 scheduled for release in March and April respectively. A spin-off manga, Koro Sensei Q, started last year that put the characters into a fantasy RPG setting. It is unlicensed at the moment. There are also two anime of the show. The first that ran in 2015 covered the first 9 volumes of the manga. The second series just started this January and will presumably cover the rest of the series. Both were licensed by Funimation, who is simulcasting the second series. There is also a live action movie scheduled for release in Japan later this year.
Viz Media licensed the manga in 2014, something fans thought unlikely since the series is about students trying to kill their teacher, and there are prominent use of fire arms (even though the series is quite clear that the ammo will only hurt the Koro Sensei and not the students). But the title’s positive and encouraging message has made it quite popular. Every volume so far has reached the New York Times Top 10 manga list, and it was among YALSA’s Great Graphic Novels for Teens list for 2016.
Viz has only released 8 volumes of the title so far, with the latest only coming out this month, giving us 12 more volumes to look forward too. I really wish this success would give us Matsui’s previous title Majin Tantei Nogami Neuro. Viz streamed the anime, but we’ve yet to get a license announcement for the manga.
