Weekly Top Ten Manga

Every week, the New York Times and Amazon posts the top ten bestselling books. The New York Times gets their numbers from print sales from retailers, while Amazon calculates their own numbers. Once a month the Nielsen Bookscan posts their top twenty graphic novels of which manga is included. Offered here is a listing of these books with their status this week compared with the previous week, along with some way-off analysis of the activity.

The release of the new Viz shonen titles sends a wave of debuts into the top ten. Akame ga Kill Vol 5 losing the top spot, falling 3, as My Hero Academia Vol 3 debuts at #1. One Piece vol 77 follows in at #2 as does JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Battle Tendency Vol 2 which comes in at #3. The other debuts include Assassination Classroom Vol 8 and Food Wars Vol 10 at #5 and #6 respectively.  One-Punch Man only keeps two volumes on the list including vol 1 which holds steady at #7. Noragami vol 10 takes the biggest dive, 6 spots to land at #10. I’m glad to see some of the other publishers be able to hang on the list and not let it be a total Viz fest again.

The Monster Girls of Monster Musume Vol 8 just couldn’t hold on and get knocked down two places to #3 while One-Punch Man vol 1 returns to take the throne of the top spot.  The rest of the One-Punch Man volumes fall back to the bottom of the list. Tokyo Ghoul moves up to three volumes as vol 4 returns. The only debut title is One Piece vol 77, which just squeaks in at #10. Again, only on non-Viz title can hang on, but at least it’s keeping to the top five.

Manga gained two spots for the month of January, bring them up to 9, and almost half the entire list. The Naruto sequel, Naruto: The Seventh Hokage and the Scarlet Spring debuts at #1. One-Punch Man now has all four print volumes on the list, as does Tokyo Ghoul. Should it be a surprise the Nielsen Bookscan is starting to reflect what we’ve been seeing on the NYT and Amazon list for weeks? I think the real surprise is that it didn’t happen sooner.
