Weekly Top Ten – April 9, 2016

Weekly Top Ten MangaEvery week, the New York Times and Amazon posts the top ten bestselling books. The New York Times gets their numbers from print sales from retailers, while Amazon calculates their own numbers. Once a month the Nielsen Bookscan posts their top twenty graphic novels of which manga is included. Offered here is a listing of these books with their status this week compared with the previous week, along with some commentary on the activity.

  2. One-Punch Man Vol 1     ↑ 2
  3. Princess Jellyfish Vol 1
  4. Tokyo Ghoul Vol 1     ↓ 2
  5. No Game No Life Novel Vol 4     ↓ 4
  6. Akame ga Kill! Zero Vol 1     ↑ 2
  7. Tokyo Ghoul Vol 5     ↵ 6
  8. One-Punch Man Vol 5     ↑ 1
  9. Tokyo Ghoul Vol 2     ↵ 24
  10. One-Punch Man Vol 2     ↵ 19

Two big surprises make the list this week! There is a new top title as Vertical Comics’ slice of life comedy Nichijou Vol 1 debuts at #1. Coming in not too far behind is Kodansha Comics’ josei, or women-aimed series Princess Jellyfish Vol 1 coming in at #3. Last week’s top title, No Game No Life Novel Vol 4 falls 4 spots to #5 and is met up by Akame ga Kill! Zero Vol 1 which moves up 2. Filling the gaps in the rest of the list is Tokyo Ghoul and One-Punch Man, usually with like volumes falling in step. It’s awesome that Nichijou and Princess Jellyfish made it to the list. Nichijou has an anime streaming that has probably helped boost it up. Princess Jellyfish is a chance Kodansha took and seems to be paying off. We’ll see how well future volumes do.
AmazonAmazon.com for the week ending April 9, 2016

  1. Tokyo Ghoul 6Tokyo Ghoul Vol 6     ↑ 3
  2. Attack on Titan Vol 18     ↑ 4
  3. One-Punch Man Vol 1     ↓ 2
  4. One-Punch Man Vol 5     ↑ 4
  5. One-Punch Man Vol 2     ↑ 5
  6. Tokyo Ghoul Vol 1     ↓ 4
  7. Tokyo Ghoul Vol 2
  8. Tokyo Ghoul Vol 3     ↵ 26
  9. One-Punch Man Vol 4    ↵ 14
  10. One-Punch Man Vol 3     ↵ 21

Only one non-Viz Media title survives the One-Punch Man and Tokyo Ghoul onslaught this week. Attack On Titan Vol 18 makes an impressive move up 4 spots to land behind Tokyo Ghoul Vol 6, which also moved up 3 spots to land at #1. The rest of the list is made up of One-Punch Man and Tokyo Ghoul lining up in 2s and 3s. While I get One-Punch Man and Tokyo Ghoul is popular, these top ten lists are getting monotonous with just these two titles dominating. Another publisher needs to find a new break out hit and actually give Viz some competition.
