Weekly Top Ten Manga

Every week, the New York Times and Amazon posts the top ten bestselling books. The New York Times gets their numbers from print sales from retailers, while Amazon calculates their own numbers. Once a month the Nielsen Bookscan posts their top twenty graphic novels of which manga is included. Offered here is a listing of these books with their status this week compared with the previous week, along with some commentary on the activity.


New York Times Bestseller List for the week ending April 16, 2016

And we’re back to the top spot rotating out every week. This week Seven Seas Entertainment’s shojo title Ancient Magus’ Bride Vol 4 takes it in its debut, pushing Attack on Titan Vol 18 down one. It is joined by other newcomers Attack on Titan Before the Fall Vol 7, Fairy Tail Vol 53, Assassination Classroom Vol 9 and Yu-Gi-Oh! 5Ds Vol 9. Food Wars! Vol 11 took the biggest fall, sliding down 6 places, while Nichijou Vol 1 from Vertical Comics falls 4 but still manages to stay on the list. An amazing feat for such an odd title.

There isn’t much change this week at Amazon. Tokyo Ghoul Vol 6 seems to have settled into the top spot, and is followed by the first volumes of One-Punch Man and My Hero Academia. Attack On Titan vol 18 is one of two none Viz Media titles, and is joined by Yen On’s Irregular at Magic High School Vol 1 light novel. We’re starting to see a “streaming effect” for My Hero Academia, as the streaming of the anime giving a boost to the manga. At least now it won’t be all Tokyo Ghoul and One-Punch Man volumes.
