Weekly Top Ten Manga

Every week, the New York Times and Amazon posts the top ten bestselling books. The New York Times gets their numbers from print sales from retailers, while Amazon calculates their own numbers. Once a month the Nielsen Bookscan posts their top twenty graphic novels of which manga is included. Offered here is a listing of these books with their status this week compared with the previous week, along with some commentary on the activity.

  8. Noragami Vol 14     ↓ 5
  9. Monster Musume: I Heart Monster Girls Vol 1     ↓ 8
  10. Tokyo Ghoul Vol 6      ↓ 2

What can topple a four panel comedy volume about monster girls? The girl with green hair of course! Yen Press’ Yotsuba&! Vol 13 debuts at the top. Coming in right behind is Black Butler Vol 22. Yen Press’ third debut title is Trinity Seven Vol 5, just missing the top five by one spot. Vertical Comics gets another title to chart with their newest, Devil’s Line Vol 1 coming in at #7. Kodasha Comics holds a spot with Noragami Vol 14 hanging on at #8. I really prefer lists like this, where several publishers get titles to chart, rather than one publisher holding a monopoly.

Amazon.com for the week ending June 4, 2016

  1. Yotsuba 13Yotsuba!& Vol 13     ↑ 2
  2. orange The Complete Collection Vol 2     ↑ 6
  3. One-Punch Man Vol 6     ↑ 3
  4. One-Punch Man Vol 1     ↑ 1
  5. Tokyo Ghoul Vol 1     ↓ 3

  8. One Punch Man Vol 2      ↵ 35
  9. Overlord Vol 1     ↓ 8
  10. One-Punch Man Vol 4     ↵ 15

Yen Press’ Yotsuba&! Vol 13 does it here too, becoming the new Overlord, after toppling the hard cover light novel Overlord Vol 1 which falls 8 spots to come in at #9. orange: The Complete Collection Vol 2 from Seven Seas Entertainment moves up as well to take the second spot. One-Punch Man sees a resurgence as Vol 2 and Vol 4 return, along with Tokyo Ghoul Vol 6. Not as much variation here, as Viz continues to dominate, but at least Yen Press and Seven Seas Entertainment could make enough of an impression to come in the top two spots.
