Weekly Top Ten – June 25, 2016

Weekly Top Ten Manga

Every week, the New York Times and Amazon posts the top ten bestselling books. The New York Times gets their numbers from print sales from retailers, while Amazon calculates their own numbers. Once a month the Nielsen Bookscan posts their top twenty graphic novels of which manga is included. Offered here is a listing of these books with their status this week compared with the previous week, along with some commentary on the activity.

  1. TokyoGhoul-GN01Tokyo Ghoul Vol 1
  2. One-Punch Man Vol 1     ↑ 3
  3. Assassination Classroom Vol 10     ↑ 3
  4. Food Wars Vol 12
  5. Tokyo Ghoul Vol 2     ↑ 2
  6. Black Butler Vol 22     ↓ 3
  7. orange: The Complete Collection Vol 2     ↓ 5
  8. Tokyo Ghoul Vol 6      ↑ 2
  9. Death Note Black Vol 1     ↵ 8
  10. Tokyo Ghoul Vol 3     ↵ 14

No new titles debuted this week, allowing Tokyo Ghoul Vol 1 to keep hold of the top spot. One-Punch Man Vol 1 moves up to land right behind it, but it is the only One-Punch Man on the list after so many weeks of multiple volumes. Only two non-Viz titles manga to hold on, Yen Press’ Black Butler Vol 22 and Seven Sea’s orange: The Complete Collection Vol 2, both having lasted 4 and 3 weeks respectively. Death Note Black Vol 1 has returned for some reason, though, I wouldn’t call it “light” summer reading.

Tokyo Ghoul 7

  1. Tokyo Ghoul Vol 7
  2. One-Punch Man Vol 7     ↑ 1
  3. Haikyu! Vol 1
  4. My Hero Academia Vol 1     ↵ 13
  5. One-Punch Man Vol 8
  6. Berserk Vol 3     ↵ 2
  7. Berserk Vol 1     ↵ 7
  8. One-Punch Man Vol 6     ↓ 7
  9. Tokyo Ghoul Vol 6     ↓ 2
  10. Tokyo Ghoul Vol 1     ↓ 5

Viz titles nearly dominate here again as well. Tokyo Ghoul Vol 7 keeps the top spot with the pre-order of One-Punch Man Vol 7 right behind. Two other pre-orders made the list , Haikyu! Vol 1, the volleyball manga that has been highly anticipated, and One-Punch Man Vol 8, which won’t be out until September! Something exciting must be going on for a book that won’t be out for three months to make it. The one oddity on the list is also the only non-Viz  title. Berserk Vol 1 and 3 from Dark Horse Comics return to the list for some reason, keeping two volumes of My Hero Academia from reaching the list and making it an all Viz list again.
