Weekly Top Ten – July 23, 2016

Weekly Top Ten Manga

Every week, the New York Times and Amazon posts the top ten bestselling books. The New York Times gets their numbers from print sales from retailers, while Amazon calculates their own numbers. Once a month the Nielsen Bookscan posts their top twenty graphic novels of which manga is included. Offered here is a listing of these books with their status this week compared with the previous week, along with some commentary on the activity.

New York Times Bestseller List for the week ending July 16, 2016

  1. One Punch Man 01 One-Punch Man Vol 1     ↑ 7
  2. One-Punch Man Vol 7     ↓ 1
  3. Tokyo Ghoul Vol 1     ↑ 3
  4. Orange: The Complete Collection Vol 2     ↵ 5
  5. Bleach Vol 67     ↓ 2
  6. Orange: The Complete Collection Vol 1
  7. Haikyu!! Vol 1     ↓ 5
  8. Tokyo Ghoul Vol 7     ↓ 3
  9. Assassination Classroom Vol 10     ↵ 3
  10. Tokyo Ghoul Vol 2     ↓ 1

There were some strange changes to the list this week. One-Punch Man Vol 1 shot up to the top, knocking Vol 7 down a notch. No real surprise here as the anime finally premiered on Cartoon Network last week. I did kind of expect more volumes to return. What did return was Orange: The Complete Collection Vol 2 from Seven Seas Entertainment, and debuting along with it was Orange: The Complete Collection Vol 1. It seems odd that Vol 2 would make the list before Vol 1, but these are strange times. Assassination Classroom Vol 10 also returned, while Bleach Vol 67 and Haikyu!! Vol 1, from Viz’s shonen wave last week, dropped some spots, but at least held on to fight for another week.

  1. One-Punch Man 7One-Punch Man Vol 7     ↔ 3
  2. Berserk Vol 1     ↔ 2
  3. One-Punch Man Vol 1     ↑ 1
  4. Berserk Vol 2     ↑ 2
  5. Pokemon Adventures Red & Blue Box Set     ↑ 2
  6. One-Punch Man Vol 8     ↓ 2
  7. Berserk Vol 3     ↑ 2
  8. Tokyo Ghoul Vol 1     ↔ 1
  9. Berserk Vol 4
  10. Tokyo Ghoul Vol 7     ↓ 5

Not much has changed here this week. The two top titles remain the same with One-Punch Man Vol 7 holding on for its third week. The power of anime really seems to be helping Berserk, as it adds its fourth volume to the list. Pokemon Adventures Red & Blue Box Set seems to still be sharing in the popularity of the mobile game Pokemon Go! One-Punch Man still hasn’t seen a boost from its anime showing, or it’s just slow in building.
