There are some dramatic movers and shakers on the list this week. Two Yen Press titles, Akame ga Kill Vol 1 and Black Butler Vol 19 make some big jumps to return to the top 5. Also of interest is the return of Black Butler Vol 1. This used to be the Volume 1 power mover until Attack on Titan came along. Viz gets some of their shonen titles on the list with a new Deadman Wonderland debut at #2, and an unusual Signature title appearance with Gansta debuting at #3. Death Note makes a return for some reason, and Assassination Classroom takes the longest fall, 8 spots, after only 3 weeks on the list.

Pre orders are making quite a dent in the list this week, half of the list to be exact. JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure Vol 1 is finally released and Vol 2 immediately makes the list, and it won’t be out until May! The new Monster Musume moves up the most, 7 spots, to come in behind Legend of Zelda which seems to have staked out the top spot for a while. Attack on Titan Vol 1 takes the biggest fall, 6 spots, but just holds on at #9. This list has the most static titles with three keeping the same spot, and surprising all in the top five.

The great price on the Boys Over Flowers Bundle pushes it up to the top spot this week. There’s only one debut with Deadman Wonderland Vol 7, while several volume 1 return. Many of these titles were featured in the Fresh Jump Bundle as well as Assassination Classroom Vol 1 returning with Vol 2. Food Wars also got an addition volume, though Vol 3 seems a little odd.

  10. Black Butler Vol 19     ↓ 1

The final Neon Genesis Evangelion, a series over a decade old, takes the list, debuting in the top spot, forcing Assassination Classroom Vol 2 down one to #2. Attack on Titan Vol 1 makes an aggressive move back up the list to reach the top five. Seven Seas Entertainment gets two titles to debut, one for male gaze, and one for female. Yen Press has kept three titles on list for a month now. Black Butler is a perennial favorite, but Sword Art Online is becoming a proven seller, and Akame ga Kill! is off to a good start with its first volume.

Amazon’s top five hasn’t changed all that much. Legend of Zelda is going to be a big seller for Viz with the pre-order hanging onto the top for the last few weeks now. More pre-orders join it with the new Naruto and Monster Musume charting. Returnees are making a good show as well with All You Need Is Kill and Sword Art Online: Aincrad Novel Vol 2 charting. Attack on Titan volumes are constantly returning, so I don’t see them as too much of a big deal. The only surprise is which ones will be joining Volume 1.

  9. Toriko Vol 26      ↓ 4
  10. Honey Blood Vol 1     ↵

Vizmanga’s top title doesn’t change as Assassination Classroom Vol 2 holds on. The debut of the Happy Marriage?! vol 10, the last volume in the series, is a nice surprise. Viz Signature titles don’t makes the list as much as they should. The Boys Over Flowers Bundle was obviously too good of a deal for people to pass up, getting it just into the top five. All the volume 1 returnees are interesting, and kind of unexpected. Two volumes, All You Need Is Kill and Seraph of the End were part of the YALSA Good Graphic Novel Of Teens list, so maybe that had something to do with it.

Viz Media’s shonen releases have an impact of the list as the new series Assassination Classroom Vol 2 takes the top spot and is followed by the print version of Food Wars! Vol 4. Proving you can’t keep a Titan down, Attack on Titan vol 1 returns  again as it yo-yos on and off the list. Yen Press keeps four titles on the list even though Akame ga Kill! Vol 1 lost the top. Kodansha is right behind with one three volumes, but they are strong sellers Fairy Tail and newer series Noragami. It can’t all be about Titans.

For the second week in a row, a pre-order is the top seller. Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past keeps the top spot. Attack on Titan Vol 15, another pre-order also makes it into the top 5. The final Evangelion volume jumps into the second spot pushing Attack on Titan Vol 1 down just a tad. Akame ga Kill! Vol 1 didn’t fare as well as it was nearly forced off the list, landing at #9. The Legend of Zelda Box set continues to do well too, no doubt fueled by the Link to the Past pre-orders.

It shouldn’t come as any surprise that Assassination Classroom Vol 2 took the top of Viz’s list if it could take the top of the NYT. Bleach continues to have its followers, but they seem to be more online than in stores. Nisekoi keeps its latest two volumes on the list if not at the top. The sci-fi series World Trigger makes a good showing as Vol 4 debuts at #3. Vampire Knight fans are no doubt eating up the digital only chapters of Life as it debuted this week, so I expect to see it rank higher next week.

Yen Press does well this week as it holds four of the top five spots, including Akame ga Kill! Vol 1 keeping the top spot for the second week. A lot of titles returned as well, with Viz getting two titles to chart in Assassination Classroom Vol 1 and Deadman Wonderland Vol 2. Kodansha’s Seven Deadly Sins Vol 6 returns after taking a week off after its debut. Attack on Titan Vol 1 has been on a bit of a roller coaster ride this year so far. It disappeared from the list at the beginning of January, returned for a couple of weeks before falling off again this week. It’s odd to see the list without one.

This is pretty amazing. A title that won’t be released until May has made it to the top of the list. Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past is a pre-order that apparently a lot of people want. Attack on Titan Vol 1 and Akame ga Kill! Vol 1 both moved down one to make room for it. It seems that people are preparing early for the new Legend of Zelda, as the box set moves up again this week. Attack on Titan continues to do better online than in stores four volumes keep vigil on Amazon bestsellers compared to NYT’s none.

Vizmanga.com for the week of January 27, 2015

  7. Food Wars Vol 4
  8. Jaco: The Galactic Partrolman
  9. Nisekoi! Vol 9
  10. One Piece Vol 73

The Vizmanga top ten returns after two months of nothing, so since all the books are now new, I will treat the list as if it’s new. Viz Select titles make a good showing, taking four of the five top spots, but not the #1 spot. That belongs to the newest Nisekoi! volume. The list is almost sandwiched by that series, except that Vol 9 fared just a little better than the newest One Piece volume which sits at #10. Food Wars also gets a double dose charting as volumes 3 and 4 sit next to each other.

Nielson Bookscan Top 20 for January 2015

5. Naruto 68Naruto Vol 68     ↑ 3
8. Attack on Titan Vol 1     ↑ 6
18. All You Need is Kill Omnibus

Manga hasn’t fared as well on the Bookscan front, and may continue to not do so as ICv2 has changed the way it reports the numbers from it, adding more non-fiction titles to the mix. Only time will tell. The same two volumes that were there in December continue on in January, even moving up a few spots, and are joined by the All You Need is Kill omnibus.  Maybe next month will show some movement with more titles debuting at the end of January and into February.

At 43 weeks on the list, it used to be the longest until Attack on Titan made its mark, doubling that time to 83. Volume 1 climbs one to #3, switching places with volume 2 of No RegretsNoragami vol 1 also returns as does Sword Art Online: Aincrad along with the debut of Sword Art Online: Progressive vol 1.

Kodansha’s Titans continue to rule at Amazon. Volume 1 returns to the top spot, knocking Akame ga Kill! vol 1 down one, while four other volumes fill various spots on the list. Kodansha seals its dominance with the first volume of Fairy Tail working back up into the top ten. Viz Media’s only appearance comes from the box set of the Legend of Zelda manga, possibly spurred by the license announcement of  the Shotaro Ishinomori Legend of Zelda manga. Yen Press only does a little better with Sword Art Online and Black Butler keeping them alive.

Check it out if you interested in the series. Viz’s One Piece Vol 73 debuts at #2 along with Nisekoi Vol 7. Kodansha swaps out one fantasy adventure, Fairy Tail, for another, The Seven Deadly Sins Vol 6. Yen Press does better on Amazon. They have four titles, including the top title, Akame ga Kill Vol 1 which takes it after one week, and two Sword Art Online titles. Black Butler Vol 19 was just released this week and it’s already at #4. That should be showing up on the NYT list soon. Attack on Titan was never in danger here, with three volumes, including Vol 1 in the top three. Jojo’ s Bizarre Adventure Part 1 makes an interesting appearance now as well as being the top Viz Media title on the list. Not too shabby.

Manga really took a beating on Bookscan in December. People were buying comic book trades, hard covers and deluxe editions like nobody’s business. The two titles to make the list are no surprise; Naruto and Attack on Titan. Hopefully with the new year will come a better showing for manga.

But even without vol 1, Attack on Titan does keep the record of longest on the list with No Regrets holding at 10 weeks. Sword Art Online Fairy Dance vol 2 is pulling a yo-yo stunt as it bounces on and off the #1 spot. Master Keaton makes a huge bound upwards as it comes in at #2. Only one title debuted this week with Fairy Tail vol 45 landing in the middle. The list is surprisingly stable with only titles switching spots for the most part.

This is one very surprising list! There is a new top title, and it’s Dark Horse’s vocaloid manga about Hatsune Miku. This is quite a come back for a title that only appeared once on the list earlier in the year, but has had a strong showing in the holiday season. I  may have to read it now. The other really big surprise is that Attack on Titan Vol 1 has dropped off the list. Last week it was at #2 and 81 weeks on the list. How the mighty can fall. But the list isn’t completely Titan free as Attack on Titan No Regrets Vol 2 returns. I really need to read that one too. Seven Seas has a surprising debut with Citrus Vol 1 . BL titles have made the list, but I think this is a first for a GL. Viz Media’s Master Keaton Vol 1 debuts as well, and rightfully so. That volume was fantastic, and everything I had hoped for.

Attack On Titan No Regrets Vol 2 pops in as Vol 1 pops out, while the series as whole continues to dominate here. Deadman Wonderland Vol 1 and old-timer Berserk Vol 1 make a surprising appearance on the list, and in the middle too. These along with One Piece Vol 73 and Naruto Vol 68 keep Viz as the publisher with the second most titles this week.

Pre and post-Christmas sales and the list doesn’t change too much this week. Kingdom Hearts II Vol 3 makes a huge leap from #10 to take the top spot, knocking both Attack on Titan Vol 1 and Naruto Vol 68 down. Assassination Classroom Vol 1 just manages to hold on in the top 5. The UnOfficial Hatusne Mix surprisingly hangs on for  a second week and an all-time 3 weeks on the list. Only two new titles made a debut, both from Yen Press. He’s My Only Vampire is a new titles while Spice and Wolf charts with its 10th volume.

The Attack on Titan legions were out en masse this week. 8 of the 14 volumes available made the list, with the first and most recent volumes holding their places and #2 and #3 from last week. Sword Art Online: Aincrad Novel Vol 2 also keeps a tight rein on its place at the top. Pre-orders for the newest volume of One Piece pushes it into the top ten giving Viz a nice little run of titles from #6-8. Stuck in the middle of the made Titan run is Monster Musume Vol 5, keeping it hold on the list, but still sliding down. Can the monster girls continue to compete with the monster Titans?

Christmas can make a top ten list seem quite fickle. Some of the returnees from last week have already moved on, and were replaced with other returnees. One of the more surprising is Unofficial Hatsune Mix from Dark Horse. This volume only hit the top ten once, when it first debuts, and has now returned, no doubt due to wish lists being fulfilled. Attack on Titan Vol 1 retakes the top spot, swapping with Naruto, while Attack on Titan Vol 2 returns. If you’re giving the gift of manga, just one won’t due! Viz’s Assassination Classroom makes quite the move up, stopped only be the juggernauts of Naruto and Attack on Titan. Yen Press is able to sneak some of their new releases on the list, including Spice and Wolf and Kingdom Hearts II.

Last minute ordering and after Christmas gift cards has made quite an impact on the Amazon top 20. Sword Art Online: Aincrad Novel vol 2 was able to push back Attack on Titan vol 1 to take the top manga spot. The Attack on Titan franchise holds at four volumes, switching out the Colossus edition for No Regrets. A lot of the box sets went away and were replaced by first volumes of popular titles. Akira, Spice & Wolf Light Novel and Black Butler all climbed back up to the top 20. Monster Musume‘s latest, vol 5 moves up as does the first Sailor Moon Box Set, putting essentially the entire series on the list.

There was not a lot of movement on the list this week.  Four titles, including the top two remained in the same spots. Seven Seas lost their Monster girls in favor of two game-playing hikkikomori with No Game No Life Vol 1 returning to the list. The only debuts this week were from Kodansha and Viz with Attack on Titan Before the Fall Vol 3 and Assassination Classroom Vol 1. Black Butler Vol 1 continues to do well, moving up to take the third top spot. as well as hitting 42 total weeks on the list. Only Attack on Titan Vol 1 has done better.

With Viz not posting a top ten again, and Christmas less than a week away, I decided to check out the Amazon.com bestsellers for manga to see what was selling online. 12 of the first top 20 were manga. Attack on Titan is doing well of course, with not only four volumes charting in the top 20, but also the omnibus of the first five volumes, the Colossal Edition. It makes sense that this volume sells better online. Box Sets are doing well too, with four different sets charting, including the first Tokyopop/HarperCollins’ Warriors trilogy. Warriors fans are dedicated and many. Box sets are a great way to pick up a new series, or complete and old one, and make great gifts, obviously.

Viz Media has all the debuting titles this week, including the new top title. Naruto vol 68 pushes the monster girls from Monster Musume off their perch. It joins the previous Naruto, vol 67 to be the only title with consecutive volumes on the list. Millenium Snow‘s fourth and final volume debuts in the top five as well, and is the only shojo on the list. Black Butler makes its seasonal return as Yen Press’ only title, while Kodansha’s Noragami vol 1 makes a somewhat surprising, but not unwelcome, return.
