Weekly Top Ten Manga

Every week, the New York Times and Amazon posts the top ten bestselling books. The New York Times gets their numbers from print sales from retailers, while Amazon and Vizmanga.com calculates their own numbers. Offered here is a listing of these books with their status this week compared with the previous week, and some way-off analysis of the activity.

New York Times Bestseller List for the week Ending February 14, 2015

  1. Evangelion 14Neon Genesis Evangelion Vol 14     ∗
  2. Assassination Classroom Vol 2     ↓ 1
  3. Unofficial Hatsune Mix     ↑ 3
  4. Attack on Titan Vol 1     ↑ 6
  5. Sword Art Online: Progressive Vol 1     ↑ 2
  6. Dragonar Academy Vol 5     ∗

  8. Akame ga Kill Vol 1     ↓ 5
  9. Alice in the Country of Joker: Circus and Liars Game Vol 7     ∗
  10. Black Butler Vol 19     ↓ 1

The final Neon Genesis Evangelion, a series over a decade old, takes the list, debuting in the top spot, forcing Assassination Classroom Vol 2 down one to #2. Attack on Titan Vol 1 makes an aggressive move back up the list to reach the top five. Seven Seas Entertainment gets two titles to debut, one for male gaze, and one for female. Yen Press has kept three titles on list for a month now. Black Butler is a perennial favorite, but Sword Art Online is becoming a proven seller, and Akame ga Kill! is off to a good start with its first volume.

  8. Sword Art Online: Aincrad Vol 2     ↵
  9. Monster Musume Vol 6     ∗
  10. Attack on Titan Vol 8     ↵

Amazon’s top five hasn’t changed all that much. Legend of Zelda is going to be a big seller for Viz with the pre-order hanging onto the top for the last few weeks now. More pre-orders join it with the new Naruto and Monster Musume charting. Returnees are making a good show as well with All You Need Is Kill and Sword Art Online: Aincrad Novel Vol 2 charting. Attack on Titan volumes are constantly returning, so I don’t see them as too much of a big deal. The only surprise is which ones will be joining Volume 1.

  8. Seraph of the End Vol 1     ↵
  9. Toriko Vol 26      ↓ 4
  10. Honey Blood Vol 1     ↵

Vizmanga’s top title doesn’t change as Assassination Classroom Vol 2 holds on. The debut of the Happy Marriage?! vol 10, the last volume in the series, is a nice surprise. Viz Signature titles don’t makes the list as much as they should. The Boys Over Flowers Bundle was obviously too good of a deal for people to pass up, getting it just into the top five. All the volume 1 returnees are interesting, and kind of unexpected. Two volumes, All You Need Is Kill and Seraph of the End were part of the YALSA Good Graphic Novel Of Teens list, so maybe that had something to do with it.

  10. Attack on Titan Vol 1     ↵ 84

Viz Media’s shonen releases have an impact of the list as the new series Assassination Classroom Vol 2 takes the top spot and is followed by the print version of Food Wars! Vol 4. Proving you can’t keep a Titan down, Attack on Titan vol 1 returns  again as it yo-yos on and off the list. Yen Press keeps four titles on the list even though Akame ga Kill! Vol 1 lost the top. Kodansha is right behind with one three volumes, but they are strong sellers Fairy Tail and newer series Noragami. It can’t all be about Titans.

  10. Attack on Titan Vol 2     ↓ 5

For the second week in a row, a pre-order is the top seller. Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past keeps the top spot. Attack on Titan Vol 15, another pre-order also makes it into the top 5. The final Evangelion volume jumps into the second spot pushing Attack on Titan Vol 1 down just a tad. Akame ga Kill! Vol 1 didn’t fare as well as it was nearly forced off the list, landing at #9. The Legend of Zelda Box set continues to do well too, no doubt fueled by the Link to the Past pre-orders.

  8. Nisekoi Vol 9     ↑ 1
  9. Vampire Knight: Life     ∗
  10. One Piece Vol 73     ↔

It shouldn’t come as any surprise that Assassination Classroom Vol 2 took the top of Viz’s list if it could take the top of the NYT. Bleach continues to have its followers, but they seem to be more online than in stores. Nisekoi keeps its latest two volumes on the list if not at the top. The sci-fi series World Trigger makes a good showing as Vol 4 debuts at #3. Vampire Knight fans are no doubt eating up the digital only chapters of Life as it debuted this week, so I expect to see it rank higher next week.

Yen Press does well this week as it holds four of the top five spots, including Akame ga Kill! Vol 1 keeping the top spot for the second week. A lot of titles returned as well, with Viz getting two titles to chart in Assassination Classroom Vol 1 and Deadman Wonderland Vol 2. Kodansha’s Seven Deadly Sins Vol 6 returns after taking a week off after its debut. Attack on Titan Vol 1 has been on a bit of a roller coaster ride this year so far. It disappeared from the list at the beginning of January, returned for a couple of weeks before falling off again this week. It’s odd to see the list without one.

  10. Attack on Titan Vol 6     ↵

This is pretty amazing. A title that won’t be released until May has made it to the top of the list. Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past is a pre-order that apparently a lot of people want. Attack on Titan Vol 1 and Akame ga Kill! Vol 1 both moved down one to make room for it. It seems that people are preparing early for the new Legend of Zelda, as the box set moves up again this week. Attack on Titan continues to do better online than in stores four volumes keep vigil on Amazon bestsellers compared to NYT’s none.

Vizmanga.com for the week of January 27, 2015

  6. Food Wars Vol 3
  7. Food Wars Vol 4
  8. Jaco: The Galactic Partrolman
  9. Nisekoi! Vol 9
  10. One Piece Vol 73

The Vizmanga top ten returns after two months of nothing, so since all the books are now new, I will treat the list as if it’s new. Viz Select titles make a good showing, taking four of the five top spots, but not the #1 spot. That belongs to the newest Nisekoi! volume. The list is almost sandwiched by that series, except that Vol 9 fared just a little better than the newest One Piece volume which sits at #10. Food Wars also gets a double dose charting as volumes 3 and 4 sit next to each other.

Nielson Bookscan Top 20 for January 2015

5. Naruto 68Naruto Vol 68     ↑ 3
8. Attack on Titan Vol 1     ↑ 6
18. All You Need is Kill Omnibus

Manga hasn’t fared as well on the Bookscan front, and may continue to not do so as ICv2 has changed the way it reports the numbers from it, adding more non-fiction titles to the mix. Only time will tell. The same two volumes that were there in December continue on in January, even moving up a few spots, and are joined by the All You Need is Kill omnibus.  Maybe next month will show some movement with more titles debuting at the end of January and into February.

Pre and post-Christmas sales and the list doesn’t change too much this week. Kingdom Hearts II Vol 3 makes a huge leap from #10 to take the top spot, knocking both Attack on Titan Vol 1 and Naruto Vol 68 down. Assassination Classroom Vol 1 just manages to hold on in the top 5. The UnOfficial Hatusne Mix surprisingly hangs on for  a second week and an all-time 3 weeks on the list. Only two new titles made a debut, both from Yen Press. He’s My Only Vampire is a new titles while Spice and Wolf charts with its 10th volume.

The Attack on Titan legions were out en masse this week. 8 of the 14 volumes available made the list, with the first and most recent volumes holding their places and #2 and #3 from last week. Sword Art Online: Aincrad Novel Vol 2 also keeps a tight rein on its place at the top. Pre-orders for the newest volume of One Piece pushes it into the top ten giving Viz a nice little run of titles from #6-8. Stuck in the middle of the made Titan run is Monster Musume Vol 5, keeping it hold on the list, but still sliding down. Can the monster girls continue to compete with the monster Titans?

Christmas can make a top ten list seem quite fickle. Some of the returnees from last week have already moved on, and were replaced with other returnees. One of the more surprising is Unofficial Hatsune Mix from Dark Horse. This volume only hit the top ten once, when it first debuts, and has now returned, no doubt due to wish lists being fulfilled. Attack on Titan Vol 1 retakes the top spot, swapping with Naruto, while Attack on Titan Vol 2 returns. If you’re giving the gift of manga, just one won’t due! Viz’s Assassination Classroom makes quite the move up, stopped only be the juggernauts of Naruto and Attack on Titan. Yen Press is able to sneak some of their new releases on the list, including Spice and Wolf and Kingdom Hearts II.

Last minute ordering and after Christmas gift cards has made quite an impact on the Amazon top 20. Sword Art Online: Aincrad Novel vol 2 was able to push back Attack on Titan vol 1 to take the top manga spot. The Attack on Titan franchise holds at four volumes, switching out the Colossus edition for No Regrets. A lot of the box sets went away and were replaced by first volumes of popular titles. Akira, Spice & Wolf Light Novel and Black Butler all climbed back up to the top 20. Monster Musume‘s latest, vol 5 moves up as does the first Sailor Moon Box Set, putting essentially the entire series on the list.

Viz Select Strikes Again

Viz Media has been bringing back a lot of older titles that have gone out of print. Most of the titles have been from former English publisher Tokyopop through Japanese publisher Kadokawa Shoten. Last week Viz announced another three titles from the Toykopop/Kadokawa Shoten licenses.

Mikansi_GN1Mikansei No. 1 is a two-volume series by creator Majiko, whose other titles include St. Lunatic High, which was also published under Viz Select, and Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion originally published here by Bandai. I really wouldn’t surprise me to see that one show up at some point. Mikansei No. 1 is about a girl named Neo who was born into the wrong century. She loves to sing and wear short skirts despite the more modest fashion of the 23rd century. Accidentally transported back in time to the 21st century, she teams up with the handsome Saya, and becomes half of singing duo. But to make it big, they need to put on a concert. It’s up to Neo to keep time on their side. At two volumes it might be interested in checking it out. I didn’t care for St. Lunatic High, her only other original title I’ve read, but this one sounds like it has potential.

Hands OffHands Off! is an eight volume shojo series by Kasana Katsumoto, whose other works lean toward the smutty side of josei, so needless to say, we won’t be seeing anything else from her any time soon. Hands Off! follows Kotarou Oohira, a boy with a clueless touch-he can transmit a kind of ESP through physical contact. He accidentally give it to his cousin Tatsuki, and comes to realize there more to his gift than he imagined. I’m not quite sure what to think of this series. I’ve seen volumes of it go by on trading site such as Paperback Swap, so it definitely got around. The action and intrigue does sound interesting, the gentle boy touching, not so much. This series also had a prequel, Hands Off: Don’t Call Us Angels.

SgtFrog-01The title I’m most excited to hear about it Sgt Frog by Mine Yoshizaki. Tokyopop released 21 volumes, with the 21st being among the last titles released by the company. Sgt. Frog follows the misadventures of Sgt. Keroro, a frog-like alien and his platoon of misfits from the planet Keron. Sent to Earth to conquer it, instead, Keroro blows his cover and loses his top-secret weapon, cutting him off from his home world. On top of that, he’s lost his platoon!  He makes a deal with the Hinata family, and in exchange for doing chores around the house, he gets his own room from which to plot his next secret plan to take over the world. And build Gundam models. Sgt. Frog is a great gag manga with a crazy cast of characters. I will definitely pick up the volumes I’m missing of this series. Maybe I’ll go back and read all the previous volumes in order to be ready!

PR: Vizmanga End of the Year Update

Viz Media ends 2014 for their expected end of the year sale of their digital titles and some unexpected new Viz Select titles. The sale is their typical $2-off-to-bring-pricing-back-down-where-it-should-be promotion and lasts through January. You know what to do with that Christmas money, and even Amazon gift cards as they seem to have extended the promotion to their site. Read on for all the details.

With Viz not posting a top ten again, and Christmas less than a week away, I decided to check out the Amazon.com bestsellers for manga to see what was selling online. 12 of the first top 20 were manga. Attack on Titan is doing well of course, with not only four volumes charting in the top 20, but also the omnibus of the first five volumes, the Colossal Edition. It makes sense that this volume sells better online. Box Sets are doing well too, with four different sets charting, including the first Tokyopop/HarperCollins’ Warriors trilogy. Warriors fans are dedicated and many. Box sets are a great way to pick up a new series, or complete and old one, and make great gifts, obviously.

One-Punch Man takes the deepest dive, falling 8 spots to land at #10. The Naruto sale finally starts to lose steam as only two titles survive, the first and the latest. Sadly, it’s still a shonen world as Kyo Kara MAOH! stands as the only shojo.

The monster girls do it again as Monster Musume vol 5 holds on to the top spot for a second week. A whole lot of volume 2s populate the list this week; 5 in total, with 4 of them right in a row. Sword Art Online: Aincrad, Attack on Titan as well as No Regrets and Noragami are all huddled together at the bottom half of the list. Attack on Titan vol 14 continues to hover around the top sport, sitting at #3 for now, looking to climb back up. Naruto Vol 67 makes a return to be the only Viz title on the list. Seven Seas and Yen Press only get one spot as well, as Kodansha dominates the remaining 7.

18. Fairy Tail Vol 43     ∗
19. Attack on Titan Vol 1     ↓ 13

Bookscan’s number for November came out this week, and manga went up by one title to six total. Attack on Titan: No Regrets stand as the top manga, but just shy of taking the whole list. Naruto doesn’t change much, only dropping two spots, while Attack on Titan Vol 1 takes the highest tumble, 13 spots to come just short of dropping off. The bigger they are, right? Seven Seas has another solid title with No Game, No Life making the top 20, as well as hanging near the middle. Here too though, Kodansha dominates, while the other publishers have to suffice with one spot each.

Weekly Top Ten Manga

Every week, Viz Media and the New York Times posts the top ten bestselling books. For Viz Media, it is the bestsellers on their site, Vizmanga.com. The New York Times gets their numbers of print sales from retailers. Offered here is a listing of these books with their status this week compared with the previous week, and some way-off analysis of the activity.

  10. Library Wars Vol 12     ∗

New digital Select titles means a nearly brand new list this week. The final volume of Chibi Vampire debuts at #1, which isn’t really a surprise if you’ve been watching it on the list. New license rescue, Kyo Kara MAOH! debuts at #2. This was another former Tokyopop title that did well in the day, and I suspect will do well in digital as well. CLAMP didn’t do as well as Suki dropped off from last week and Miyuki-chan in Wonderland lost four spots to just hold on to the list. The only other title to carry over from last week, Nisekoi, fared better, only dropping 3 spots and staying in the top five.

A new title has bounced the Titans from the top. Vertical, Inc.’s surprise hit surprises again as the newest volume of Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin the top spot, sending Kodansha’s Attack on Titan Vol 1 tumbling but not that far. Noragami Vol 1 moves back up to the top five, but the rest of the Titan gang is right behind, keeping the series in a tight pack. Seven Seas’ Monster Musume Vol 4 returns to put another tic on their weeks on the list. Yen Press, which did so well last week has dropped down to just two volumes on the list, while Viz Media has been completely vanquished.

12. Noragami Vol 1
13. Attack on Titan Vol 2
19. Naruto Vol 66

This week also includes a new Bookscan for September. Manga loses a spot, with only eight volumes take the list. Like the NYT list, Attack on Titan takes four of those spots including the two highest at #2 and #5. Noragami makes the list for the first time, landing around the middle. Viz is the only other publisher to chart, with Yu-Gi-Oh 5Ds landing the highest at #7. One Piece makes at good show around the middle, and Naruto takes the biggest fall, from a top five title last month to a bottom of the list this month. I wonder if the news of its ending will effect its sales any?

CLAMP shows its older works still have pull as new rescues for the Select line, Miyuki-Chan in Wonderland and Suki debut on the list. One Punch Man and Seraph of the End made conspicuous returns as well.

New titles from Yen Press make an impression on the list this week. Soul Eater gets as high on the list as Pirates and Titans will let it. Spice and Wolf makes a welcome return and Durarara!!‘s newest series isn’t in too far behind. And speaking of Titans, Volume 1 amazingly retakes the top spot, and No Regrets is now 3 months on the list with only one week dropped! Kodansha still rules the list with the help of the titans at 5 spots, and Yen Press gets to enjoy a momentary second with 3 and Viz lagging behind at 2.

New VizSelect titles knock down some of the new releases from last week. Chibi Vampire debuts again at the top with its penultimate volume. Newcomer Lucky Star is right behind with its second volume. In fact, the top 4 spots are taken by VizSelect titles, pushing the big Shonen Jump titles back down. Bleach rejoins his fellow SJ titles One Piece and Food Wars! while Bokurano Ours charts with its final volume. That is not a title I am going to miss.

Kodansha dominates the list this week as it takes 6 of the ten spots. Noragami picks up steam as it zooms up to the top spot. The Titans seem to be gears for another assault as they gather at the top and bottom of the list. Seven Seas Entertainment’s Monster Musume returns for their only title. Viz’s new sci-fi title Terra Formars makes its debut in the middle, and Yen Press’ perennial favorite, Black Butler Volume 1 returns to try to catch up to Attack on Titan Volume 1. Yeah, good luck with that!
