It’s…not much of a list again, so while we present this week’s releases, our picks are in honor of the Manga Movable Feast this week, which is all about Rumiko Takahashi’s works. Enjoy as our reviews pick their all-time favorite Takahashi title.

The Picks:

Amy’s Pick: My all time favorite pick from Rumiko Takahashi is Inuyasha! Haters gonna hate but this is my first shonen series, let alone first manga that I ever picked up, so it will always have a special place in my heart!

Connie’s Pick: I gotta go with Mermaid Saga, myself.  I read it when I was in high school and never forgot it.  After reading so much else by her, it’s strange that it’s a straight-up horror manga, but the themes of gore and mermaids never looked so good together.  Add in the sensitive look at what it really means to be immortal, and I’m hooked forever.  I keep hoping she’ll go back to it one day, like One Pound Gospel.

Justin’s Pick: C’mon Amy, nobody’s going to hate; how could anyone hate anything by Takahashi? The trend here is first loves, I think: for me, it’s a swirly mix of Ranma ½ and her Rumic World short stories. Released waaaay back in the late 80’s-early 90’s, I picked it up because I had missed out on the Lum stuff I’d seen here and there. Now that’s a series I’d love to see properly reprinted (I missed the Animerica “Return of Lum” material in the 90’s).

Lori’s Pick: If it’s first loves, then I have to go with Urusei Yatsura. I bought all of the floppies Viz put out (which are now sadly lost to time). I was indoctrinated with the anime, and couldn’t wait to get a hold of the source material, incomplete as it was. I too would love to see a proper reprint of Urusei Yatsura/Lum. While “the kids today” may not appreciate the older art and wacky comedy, Urusei Yatsura has a very special place in our hearts for us old school 80s fans.

Alex’s Pick: I’ll be the sap of the group and pick Maison Ikkoku – it’s a love story that has a lot of great strengths and shows that Takahashi can do just about anything she sets her mind to – whether or not she chooses to do shonen comedy, romance, or horror, she’s a great creator. I would love to see Viz reprint it, or publish it on their Viz manga app – it’s a series that has a lot going for it, but the books are really hard to find since it has been out of print for a while.
